Gather this ai??i?? 54 career league goals in 121 appearances to date, 17 goals last season in the EPL, 4 goals already this season, a Belgian international with 21 caps already to his name, thought by fans to be the ai???next Didier Drogbaai??i?? – all of this at the age of 20. If there was ever a sure fire way to superstardom, this is it. And Romelu Lukaku is every bit a superstar already.
Lukaku joined Chelsea in August 2011 from RSC Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League. He had a growing reputation around Europe of being one of the best young ai???target-menai??i?? around. The credit for discovering and finding the talent goes to Andre Villas-Boas who signed him as Chelsea boss. He wasnai??i??t, however, the marquee signing that season, with Mata taking that honour.
His first stint with the club was mainly limited to substitute appearances and playing in the League Cup. As happens with many players (including Drogba) he struggled to adapt to the Premier League in his debut season. In the aftermath of his fairly forgetful first season, he was loaned out to West Bromwich Albion where he could get more playing time. The move turned out to be a masterstroke as it not only benefitted West Brom, but also Lukaku who hit his stride that season.
He came back to Stamford Bridge this summer after scoring 17 goals for the Baggies in the Premier League and an ever-growing stature in the football world. Many fans were, even then, questioning the decision to let him go to West Brom in the first place. He played Chelseaai??i??s pre-season games and also featured in the UEFA Super Cup final in Prague where he missed the decisive penalty against UCL champions, Bayern Munich. That, however, was just a blip in an otherwise positive looking and a hungry-for-goals striker. He was, in fact, Chelseaai??i??s top scorer in the pre-season.
However, to everyoneai??i??s surprise, he was loaned out to Everton on deadline day. It was also recently revealed that there was no callback clause in the deal. Fans and media alike had a hard time comprehending the decision to let him go for the season, which they should.
So, the question remains: Did Chelsea goof up sending Lukaku on loan? The answer, for me, is a resounding yes! Let us now examine the reason and try to understand the clubai??i??s point of view.
Lack of in-form strikers:
Normally, when a club lets a player go, it is only after they have ensured they have bought or are in talks with a suitable replacement/s. Spurs, whose work in the transfer window was appreciated by everyone, got Lamela, Eriksen and Chadli before finalsing the Bale deal. Their cross-town rivals Chelsea, however, failed to recognize that. Even with Etoai??i??o and Schurrleai??i??s singing, it hardly looked like a world-class starting line-up of strikers that many fans might have hoped. Torres (to the chagrin of many Chelsea fans) is not the Torres from his Liverpool days (by the looks of it, never will be), Ba is a decent hard-working striker but heai??i??s no Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Etoai??i??o and Schurrle are bound to take their time to settle in to the EPL.
Lukaku, however, was already there. He had a couple of seasons in the EPL to settle down. He knew the pace; the physicality of the league suited him. He was the ai???main-manai??? in the West Brom team and knew how to handle pressure quite well. All these facts make it even more baffling that a shrewd man like Mourinho ai??i?? who stuck by Drogba when most people had already written him off after his first season ai??i?? would allow this to happen.
First-team football:
In a series of interviews by Jose Mourinho and other people associated with the club, it has been stressed that Lukaku was let go so that he can have regular first-team football. This sounds a bit bizarre given that he was one of only three recognized starting strikers in the squad before the summer signings arrived. Given Mourinhoai??i??s penchant for rotation, he would have got a fair few starts and if not, substitute appearances in which, given his form, he could have proved himself to be the no.1 choice. And with all due respect to Everton, training with the likes of Lampard, Hazard and Mata among others, would have made a huge impact on him in this ai??i?? the learning phase of his career.
Also, a point that was brought up was with the World Cup around the corner, he would require goals to book his place for Rio. With Chelsea, his goals could have come in Europe. Probably against Barcelona or AC Milan or Bayern Munich. It would have done him a world of good knowing that he can compete against the best players in Europe. Each European goal (even a good performance for that matter) is worth its weight in gold and Romelu will know that better than anyone. Everton, as huge a club as they are, do not have European pedigree and do not feature in Europe this season as well.
What were they thinking?
Letai??i??s try and examine the clubai??i??s point of view in all of this. Maybe they were thinking Torres could (finally) find his form. Or maybe that Ba starts fulfilling his actual potential. Or one of Etoai??i??o and Schurrle could fire right from the start. We have to admit that it is too early in the season to start making judgments about anyoneai??i??s form. It may so happen that all of them have a good season and weai??i??re left eating humble pie.
One thing is for sure though; no football club will ever let a player leave without thinking of their best interest first. If it means that a player will come back stronger, fitter and richer from the experience, it is for the best. Even if it doesnai??i??t work out, the player can always get a fresh start at his parent club. A shrewd manager like Mourinho and at a club like Chelsea, would have thought of every possible angle before letting him go. From Mourinhoai??i??s point of view, it is a win-win situation, if Lukaku does well then it bodes well for Chelsea next year and if he doesnai??i??t, Mourinho will go around saying that it was a good decision after all.
From Lukakuai??i??s point of view, he would have loved to stay at Chelsea, make no mistake about it. The prospect of playing in Europe and training with world-class players every day would have had his mouth watering. However, he shouldnai??i??t necessarily look at all this in a negative way only. Everton are a massive club, it has history, passionate fans, a supportive board and are well respected by every one in the football fraternity. In fact, of all the clubs that were in pursuit of his signature (apart from the top 5 clubs), Everton will provide him a perfect launch pad for next season.
Whatever the situation now, Chelsea fans are hoping and praying that common sense prevails next season and he stays on with the club. He will be 21 next season, heai??i??ll be more than ready to take on the mantle from the man whom he considers his role-model ai??i?? Didier Drogba. And Chelsea fans are hoping that Mourinho (or whoeverai??i??s in charge next season) finally gives him that chance to prove himself at Stamford Bridge.
