With each passing year, La Liga has only been becoming more and more bipolar – a tendency that only promises to accentuate in the near future. Any champion, apart from Barcelona and Real Madrid is simply unimaginable these days, in fact any third team coming even within 15 points of the champion is hardly a reasonable proposition. Every year, the strong get stronger, the weak get weaker. This summer, 34 players have already left La Liga, including notable departures like Negredo and Falcao, and the accumulated debt of the ‘other’ 18 clubs is estimated to be around 4 billion Euros. While Barcelona and Real Madrid earn 150 million on TV revenue alone, the other 18 clubs earn between 5 and 20 million only, a difference that sums up the current predicament in La Liga. This is the reason why, for instance, Illarramendi and Isco have left Real Sociedad (a club that will be in the Champions League this year) and Malaga respectively to Real Madrid: it wasn’t the first nor will it be the last time that the best players of even top 6 clubs will eventually end up in one of the Big 2. The rest of the league simply doesn’t have any bargaining power in comparison.
This of course makes the league increasingly a procession for the ‘Big Two’, with both Barcelona and Real Madrid taking place in very one-sided matches week after week, which has resulted in a big loss of value for the league’s overall product. Mediapro, who owns the rights for La Liga matches, are losing subscribers at a very fast rate and even pushing to get the first El ClA?sico of this season played in the morning, so that it reaches the Asian market. The situation has reached a critical point, with over 20 clubs entering into administration over the past few seasons and the overall product of La Liga declining massively. The country’s overall economic situation surely doesn’t help, but so doesn’t Real Madrid and Barcelona’s refusal to a more equal revenue distribution. Both clubs felt the effects of the financial stranglehold they’ve been holding the rest of the league in last year in the Champions League semifinals, when German giants Bayern Munich and Borrussia Dortmund, from the significantly more competitive Bundesliga, outrunned, outplayed and outscored them, leading to an all-German Champions League final. Although Barcelona and Real Madrid probably do have the two best/deepest squads in all of football, not being properly challenged on a weekly basis in their domestic league has already had its consequences.
But that might only be the start, it is true that La Liga would suffer a lot without its two biggest clubs, but it’s equally true that Barcelona and Real Madrid will suffer a lot from an ailing league. Ultimately, the overall revenue of the league will progressively decline, as will Barcelona and Real Madrid’s as a consequence and the appeal of the league to players. Real Madrid and Barcelona will never become like Rangers and Scotland in Scotland, both of which have become progressively irrelevant in Europe over the years, but they will most definitely suffer and become less competitive against the European elite if they keep indirectly killing off their own league. The Spanish National Team is equally bound to suffer as the country can’t keep producing golden generations of footballers forever. Compared with the English and especially the German revenue models, the Spanish model is highly unfair to put it mildly and doesn’t promote a competitive league at all.
With both of Spain’s big clubs refusing to accept a fairer deal, it’s not a stretch to expect the shift in the balance of power we’re witnessing at the moment at both club and international level to continue, perhaps irreversibly. Both Spanish giants losing in the Champions League semis in each of the past two years might only be a sign of things to come. Historic clubs like Racing Santander and Deportivo are currently facing extinction, while clubs putting a decent challenge for a season like AtlAi??tico Madrid are almost inevitably doomed to lose their stars players, often to one of the top 2, and so the competition dies little by little. And only those who created this situation can solve it – Barcelona and Real Madrid. It’s up to them to either save La Liga or let it continue in this seemingly inexorable decline. The other 18 clubs too have failed to create an effective resistance of sorts and vouch for their rights, partly because of lack of organization, partly out of fear due to the huge influence of the Big 2. But what’s become very apparent is that Spanish football is at a crossroads and something must be done very quickly. Barcelona and Real Madrid are two of the biggest clubs in the world, but they are not invincible, far from it, and they will also be affected if their league keeps collapsing, arguably they already have even if the worst might be yet to come.
Another season is about to start in Spain and all the talk about Barcelona, Real Madrid, Messi, Ronaldo and co. can’t hide the big elephant in the room – most pro clubs in Spain are struggling with massive debt, with some even facing extinction, and that the league is gradually losing interest and appeal. Illarramendi and Isco moving from top 6 Spanish clubs to Real Madrid is something that has come to be expected with the current situation in the league, but a trend that can only (further) hurt the league in the long run.
