Chelsea centre back Gary Cahill has steadily improved under Jose Mourinho this season. TheHardTackle analyses his role at Chelsea, and examines whether he could finally come of age this season.
Gary Cahill, the 27 year old Dronfield born centre-back joined Chelsea in January 2012 in a deal worth about A?7 million from Bolton Wanderers. He initially faced stiff competition and had a tough time to break into the side under Andre Villas-Boas. However, by the end of the 2011-12 season he had made a strong case for himself by putting in some brilliant performances and driving Chelsea to a victory over Bayern Munich in the finals of UEFA Champions League in 2012.Ai??One good thing about Cahill is that he forms a strong partnership with every centre back he plays with, irrespective of the fact that it is with Terry, Ivanovic or Luiz for Chelsea or even if it is with Lescott or Jagielka for England.
He can be every managerai??i??s delight with his ability to adapt, high work rate and the powerhouse that he is, and so is the case with Jose Mourinho. As we all know Mourinho takes some decisions that appear to be totally out of this world initially but still finds success somehow. Arrival of a new manager always is a threat to the positions of every player in the team. As we can see in Juan Mataai??i??s case that he has not been playing for Chelsea this season as much as he did last season, thatai??i??s probably due to the change in manager and change in preference, whereas, Cahill has been a regular starter in defence. Cahill had started maturing as a world-class defender at the end of 2011/12 season when he won the Championai??i??s League trophy with Chelsea in his first 6 months for them. He was consistent under Roberto Di Matteo as well as Rafael Benitez, but what Mourinhoai??i??s arrival has done is that he has been assured of a regular spot in the defence.
Under the present Chelsea setup in the newly begun Mourinho era, spots in the starting XI would never be guarantee. Hardly a few players can be assured of anything, especially game-time. The first team squad this season has 27 players lining up to wear that Royal Blue jersey. This tells us a lot about the completion each player would face to keep their spot intact in the starting line-up. Yet Cahill has performed with such a high level of consistency till now in this season that the current sentiments are that he has a put forward many strong reasons in front of Mourinho to be a first-choice selection in the back four for the West Londoners.Ai??Cahill, to be fair to him, has never stopped growing and developing as a player. Jose Mourinho isAi??well known for creating world class teams with an extremely watertight defence. Cahill being a typical English center-back, is fearless and strong when challenging in the air, and hard and rock-solid in the tackle. He is perfectly designed and hand-picked by destiny to be a Mourinho-preferred defender.Ai??He has a commendable recovery pace in the game. But Gary’s critics have always underrated his composure on the ball. He is gifted with all the abilities and attributes generally associated with a complete defender, while his bravery when it comes to putting his body on the line is just similar to that of club skipper John Terry at that age.
Terry, now 32 years old, has once again won the faith of his old manager and has managed to start more often than the pundits expected. Cahill has started each of the Chelsea’s four Premier League matches, and with age on his side he could be in contention to cement his position even above Terry and Luiz. With his strong character and nerves of steel on the field, he could also have the chance to even be a Chelsea skipper in the long-term future, and if Mourinho stays for four to five seasons then Cahill does really have a strong case to become a legend at Chelsea.
The fighter, aerially dominant, no-nonsense centre-back that Chelsea could always use for tough away trips is Gary Cahill. The recent 1-0 loss to Everton at Goodison Park could have been avoided and also won if there wasnai??i??t a defender less positionally naive than David Luiz on the pitch. Luiz is arguably a better defensive midfielder than a centre-back, and should be taken out of that position in order to let his real abilities to shine on the pitch.
With Mourinho strictly considering Branislav Ivanovic as a right-back, Luiz being in and out of the side and Terry presently doing enough to justify his repeated selection, the only other fighter for the position discussed above comes in the form of the young Czech defender – Tomas Kalas. But if we take matters down to current form, Cahill is the most deserving Chelsea player to start in each game. If it comes down to being a big-match player, it’s still probably him. If the choice has to come down to the primary instinct to defend, Cahill is yet again the most favourable defender available at Mourinhoai??i??s perusal at Chelsea.
