Chelsea FC are riding a wave of renewed optimism, as they embark upon the new season. TheHardTackle previews the 2013-14 campaign.
Ever since the record-shattering season of 2009-10 when Carlo Ancelotti’s team lifted the Premiership title, before claiming the FA Cup, Chelsea hasn’t really competed for the league. They were second best to Manchester United in the following campaign, while their title challenge, so to speak, was conspicuous by its absence in the following years, finishing 6th and 3rd in the league respectively. Although the club secured the ever-elusive Champions League and salvaged the lost cause that was last season by winning the Europa league, it’s fair to say that they haven’t been the team to beat in England for quite some time now. Despite the success on the European front, the domestic failures haven’t gone down well with the top hierarchy at the club and an air of restlessness was palpable in the corridors of Stamford Bridge, seeing the Manchester clubs convincingly beat Chelsea to the Premiership title in the last three years.
The homecoming of Jose Mourinho is seen as a step to right the wrong and take Chelsea back to the top of English Football, and for that reason primarily, this season holds so much promise for everyone associated with the West London club.
The approach is, however, different this time round. Mourinho hasn’t been given an open purse to sign whosoever he wishes to, Ai??in order to reestablish Chelsea’s position as a title challenger, if not winner. Rather, the club has continued their policy to sign young, talented players (Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel) on the verge of breaking out on the international stage and seem willing to reap benefits of similar investments in the past (Romelu Lukaku, Kevin de Bruyne, Thomas Kalas). The only established player, or should we say superstar, that Jose has asked for is Wayne Rooney, whose transfer is far from a certainty as of today, with Manchester United understandably reluctant to sell to a direct rival.
Formations & Tactics
Jose has gone on record to state that the 4-2-3-1 system is his preferred choice and this is a formation that we are bound to see more often than not on the pitch, but it wouldn’t be a far-fetched thought to see this Chelsea team take the field in a 4-3-3 shape that the manager had used to devastating effect in his first tenure.
Going by current form, Romelu Lukaku may be preferred to lead the line, ahead of Torres and Ba. The versatility of Hazard, Oscar, Mata, Schurrle, de Bruyne and Moses presents Mourinho with a variety of options for the third attacking band, but he is expected to start the season with Hazard on the left, Mata on the right and Oscar through the middle, with Schurrle (Hazard), de Bruyne (Oscar/Hazard)) and Moses (Mata/Hazard) providing cover from the bench. In any event, however, the three players will continue to interchange their positions. Mourinho will gradually decide on his best attacking combinations for different matches/situations and will field the personnel most suited for either launching a no holds-barred attack or for providing defensive security or finally for translating into the right balance in an even game.
For the pivot, one position will be shared between Lampard and van Ginkel, while the other will be occupied by one of Essien, Mikel or Ramires, with the later also a possibility for a role further forward on the pitch. If the manager wishes to change the system to 4-3-3, the players at his disposal are versatile enough to allow him the luxury. Hazard and Mata would push further forward on either side on Lukaku, and the midfield triangle would be inverted, having a solitary holding midfielder such as Mikel or Essien, with two of Lampard, van Ginkel, Oscar or Ramires occupied positions ahead of him.
Chelsea have four centre-backs in John Terry, David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Thomas Kalas to chose from, in addition to Ivanovic, who will primarily compete with Azpilizueta for the right-back, while Bertrand will continue to push Cole for the left-back position. Luiz is expected to partner one of Terry or Cahill in crucial games, with Cole and Ivanovic taking the full-back positions. Unless injured, Petr Cech would surely occupy his position between the posts.
Player (s) to watch out for
Eden Hazard: There’s hardly anyone in world football today who doubts the limitless potential that Eden Hazard has. There were a few question marks over how he would fare against better opponents, but over last one year, he has put those doubts to rest. After setting the French league on fire, he signed for Chelsea last season, with the West London club beating Manchester United and Manchester City to his signature. He took no time to settle in the Premier League, playing a part in almost every goal that Chelsea scored in their first few matches. His breathtaking speed, close ball control, ability to change direction at breakneck pace left defenders at their wits end. He scored 9 goals and provided 16 assists. This return for a player of his caliber is however not enough and doesn’t do justice to his talent.
“Eden has been with us from the start of pre-season and at the moment I’m trying to adapt Eden into everything I think a top player should have. For example, Hazard did some defensive work in the friendly against Inter Milan that he usually doesn’t. He is a top talent, but it’s one thing being a top talent and another being a top player. And I want him to be a top player“, Mourinho had said about the precocious Belgian. This season, with Mourinho fueling his fire, Hazard can do just that. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo persevered for years (and still do) to become overnight superstars and Eden can surely look up to them for inspiration.
Prediction
Jose Mourinho has been making all the right noises that he’s here to develop this youthful team into world-beaters and that he’s in it for a long haul, but make no mistake about it – both Chelsea and Mourinho are winners; young team or not, success is not a luxury at Stamford Bridge, it’s a basic necessity and neither would demand any less from the team.
If Chelsea sign Rooney and De Rossi before the transfer window closes, then not only will they win the league for 5th time in their history, but will also give the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona a run for their money in Europe. However, as things stand, they will surely put in a strong fight for the league title, reach the knockout stage of the Champions League and lift one of the domestic cups, but will eventually fall short of their goals.
The problem presently is two-fold; not only does the team sorely lack a proven centre-forward, but it is also short of leaders on the pitch to guide the young players. The likes of John Terry and Frank Lampard aren’t certain starters anymore and in their absence, Chelsea will lack leadership in the middle, and in matches that matter the most, this will prove to be a decisive factor.
