Defending is an unglamorous job. No player wants to do it willingly when he/she starts his or her career. While the strikers and midfielders grab all the headlines, the only time a defender makes the headline is when he makes a mistake. As such, they are the most important cog in the team machinery, but they are often the most ai???ignoredai??i??.
With Chelsea, like with many other clubs, most of the media attention is focused on the goals (or the lack thereof) scored by the strikers. However, the defence has been going about its job quietly and doing it efficiently too. Letai??i??s look at the major players in the back-line and look where/how they play.
How they line up?
We of course start with the fifth man in the four-man defence, i.e. the goalkeeper, Petr Cech. He has been Chelseaai??i??s number one for a decade now, taking over from the then Stamford Bridge hero, Carlo Cudicini. Known for his excellent shot-stopping abilities, he has also improved his handling of crosses, which was once considered his weakness. He has been a model of consistency for Chelsea with every manager that has come to The Bridge preferring not to disturb the position.
The same, however, cannot be said about the rest of Chelseaai??i??s defence. All the four positions in front of Cech have seen multiple changes in personnel. Starting with right-back, they had Glen Johnson, Paulo Ferreira, Branislav Ivanovic and most recently Cesar Azpilicueta among others who have filled the position temporarily. The other end of the field, i.e. the left back position has more or less remained consistent since the great debacle of Asier Del Horno. Ashley Cole has made that position his own ever since 2005 with England colleague Wayne Bridge being relegated to the bench more often than not.
With the shape that Chelsea have adopted over the years, the full backs play a crucial role in attack as well. The narrow 4-2-3-1 formation allows for the full backs to go up and down the wing with one of the defensive midfielders holding back while the full backs are up front. Both Cole and Ivanovic have adapted themselves to the roles and provide meaningful assists and goals quite often. Azpilicueta, who played the majority of last season on the right of defence, has a more attacking mindset than Ivanovic and was forward more often. He is yet to play a major role this season.
As far as the centre backs are concerned, the England duo of Cahill and Terry is the preferred choice for Mourinho this season. However, Luiz is a perfect replacement for any of the two. More on Luizai??i??s ideal position later in the piece. Both of the central defenders complement each other perfectly. While Cahill has better pace as compared to Terry, the latter is much better at tackling. Also, with what seems to be the norm these days, all of the four defenders go out and attack from time to time with Cahill and Terry being up there for all corners.
The David Luiz Conundrum
Continuing from where we left off on Luiz, many believe his best position is not in defence, but as midfielder who can also attack. His ideal position can be the one Lampard fills in nowadays. He not only sits back, but also attacks more often than not. Lampard sits in the 2-man defensive midfield in the 4-2-3-1 and provides balls for the midfield to go on and stitch together an attack. When there is a requirement for an extra man in attack, he runs into the box and provides an extra option as well.
Luizai??i??s passing and shooting skills are well known and hence, this would be a perfect position for him to fill. This would of course mean that either of Mikel or Lampard will have to sit on the bench more often. Given that Luiz is only 25 years old, Chelsea must look to the future and give him a permanent position as soon as possible.
We have also seen that Luizai??i??s decision making, when it comes to tackling while defending, has been called into question sometimes. This position, just in front of the back four, will not only give him room for mistakes, but also will allow him to work on his tackling in training.
One for the future
Having had a look at the way the Chelsea defence currently lines up, the question everyone asks is, what about 3 seasons from now? Letai??i??s have a look at the roster that Chelsea have and the back up at every position:
Goalkeeper: Although Petr Cech is only 31 now and has a lot of years left in his contract, Chelsea have already looked into the future by signing Thibaut Courtois. He is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid, where he as been gathering positive reviews by the fans and media alike. Chelsea also completed the signing of veteran Mark Schwarzer, who is presumably going to play in the FA and League cups and is also an ideal replacement in case Cech gets injured or his form drops drastically. There is also Jamal Blackman as reserve GK, who is a youth academy product and has been gathering praise from everyone at the club.
Central Defence: With Chelsea having three options for 2 positions currently, this is one area that needs to be looked at in the next transfer window. Although Chelsea do have Tomas Kalas in the reserves, it does not look like he is going to get through the first team while there are three quality options available. As discussed previously, if Luiz does play in the midfield at some point in the future, Chelsea will definitely have to look for options either within the academy or buy quality from Europe.
Full Backs: With Ivanovic and Cole being two regular starters in the lineup, Chelsea also have very able replacements in Azpilicueta and Bertrand ready to take over from them at any available moment. Both Azpi and Bertrand have shown that they have the quality, the pace and strength to last in the Premier League. Azpi was the first choice right back for Benitez most of last season and did exceedingly well, enough to earn a call-up in the Spanish national team. And Bertrand, of course famously started and played well in the 2012 UCL finals (his first start in Chelsea colours), shows all we need to know about his ability. A noteworthy backup at left back is Patrick van Aanholt is currently on loan at Vitesse and is expected back in June 2014. With Ashley Cole in the twilight of his career, having two backups at left back makes sense.
In summary, Chelseaai??i??s defence looks solid at the moment. But like in the previous years, if there are multiple injuries to players in defence, there might be a crisis lurking. But Mourinho being Mourinho, will find a way to cope with this too.
