FC Barcelona Player Ratings – Messi Superb, Valdes Error-prone

100 points. La Liga Champions. FC Barcelona may have won a cup, but itai??i??s more of a pyrrhic victory ai??i?? they have lost more than they have won. With Barcelonaai??i??s dominance over Spain and Europe, Real Madrid had to sign Jose Mourinho and a host of other world class stars to thaw the Catalans. However, at the end of Jose Mourinhoai??i??s tenure, he had won 1 La Liga, 1 Copa del Rey and 1 Spanish Super Cup. His record for Real Madrid against Barcelona too isnai??i??t quite impressive ai??i?? played 17, won 5, drawn 6, lost 6 ai??i?? this also includes the humiliating 5-0 thrashing. However, it wasnai??i??t Real Madrid, with their neo-Galacticos and Jose Mourinho that humbled Barcelona. Another Real Madrid reject, ironically a man who had won them their first Champions League in 32 years, Jupp Heynckes, who outmuscled Barcelona in every possible aspect and won a Treble with Bayern Munich.

Guardiolaai??i??s chose not to extend his contract and the curse of Bella Gutmann caught up with him. Mourinho too perhaps was a victim of that, albeit, a little too early. Vilanova may have created a record for the most number of points this season but it is safe to assume that it was the inertia of the Guardiola-era that took the team ahead. For a considerable part of the season, Vilanova was physically not fit to lead the team and in his absence, Jordi Roura proved to be an inept caretaker. And the weaknesses which were camouflaged by their style of football, came to the fore and were exploited to the fullest by European heavyweights. The recent acquisition of Neymar is perhaps a way to plug the holes, but it is the defense that needs the most refurbishments and hopefully Rosell and Vilanova will find out a solution. TheHardTackle presents the player ratings for Barcelona, this season.

Goalkeeper

Victor Valdes ai??i?? 6/10

Clearly one of the worse seasons for Barcelona, Valdesai??i?? costly mistake allowed Angel Di Maria to score a goal which eventually cost them the Spanish Super Cup. Moreover, his decision not to extend his contract, for reasons best known to him, has not helped his cause either. Victor Valdes may have been a loyal servant but when the club is going through a transition, he decides to abandon ship.

His performance otherwise has been pedestrian and from under his nose a young Belgian took away the Zamora trophy with exceptional performance, week after week. They say that morning shows the day and Valdesai??i?? costly mistake in the Spanish Super Cup perhaps spelled his season for him. In 44 outings, Valdes has let in 54 goals, at a rate of 1.23 goals per match. Last season was perhaps a bad year for Barcelona, but even then, Victor let in 42 goals in 52 outings at a rate of 0.81 per match. This seasonai??i??s defense has been arguably worse than last seasons, but Valdes seemed distracted for a major part of the season, especially after announcing his decision to leave.

JosAi?? Manuel Pinto ai??i?? 6/10

At 37, Pinto has nothing much to offer to Barcelona. After a successful stint at Celta Vigo, he joined Barca at the end of his career and it is without doubt that he the stint at Camp Nou will be his last as player. He did well in the chances he got, made some good saves, let in very few and always keep the dressing room lively with his antics. A good squad player.

Defence

Dani Alves ai??i?? 7.5/10

Not that great a season, going by his standards, but Alves has had a decent season. Clocked 2264 minutes in La Liga, in 30 outings at an average of 75.4 minutes per match, and has also assisted 6 goals. He may have not played upto his usually high standards, but that has been the problem with the entire team. Of late, competition from Martin Montoya may have spurred the 30-year old fullback to raise his game. Accommodating both Montoya and Alves will be a headache for Vilanova next season, but this will be one of those problems which will brighten his mood.

Pique ai??i?? 5/10

Pique was very average and at times bad. At 26, he should be one of the defensive mainstays of any team, given the kind of promise he manifested at the beginning of his senior team tenure at Camp Nou. Shakira, Milan ai??i?? maybe he needs a break or he needs get his act together. In the absence of Puyol, Pique should be leading the defense, but he is nowhere near it. Distractions are perhaps taking their toll on him.

Puyol ai??i?? 5/10

At his age, Puyol has been spending more time on the sidelines than on the pitch and perhaps he has 1 more season for the Blaugranas. Whenever he was on the pitch, he inspired, but unfortunately, those were very few occasions.

Alba ai??i?? 7.5/10

Perhaps a very sensible buy by Barcelona, after a long time. And for just ai??i??14 million, this transfer is worth its weight in gold. His constant movement on the left has somewhat made up for Abidalai??i??s loss (although Eric, didnai??i??t move forward as much as Jordi), but his defending still needs to be worked on. His physical presence can easily undone and the way Thomas Muller and Julio Baptista outmuscled him in recent weeks will only make him an easy target for physically robust players ai??i?? unless he works on his weakness. 5 goals and 2 assists in La Liga is good enough, given itai??i??s his first season at his boyhood club.

Adriano ai??i?? 8/10

Recently extended his contract and has been very decent this season. An extremely versatile player, Adriano may have occasional periods of bad performances but overall he makes up with his versatility. His ability to move ahead is an essential aspect him his game which Barcelona exploits. He went through a purple patch when it came to finding the back of the net and at one point of time he had more goals than Real Madridai??i??s striker, Karim Benzema. His performance this season has earned him a contract extension and fans will be hoping that he maintains his high standards.

Mascherano ai??i?? 6.5/10

Suffered a major injury after tore a right knee ligament in Paris. In the absence of Puyol, Mascherano has often partnered Pique at the centre of defense. When compared to his peers at the centre, Mascherano did reasonably well and will need to be at the top of his game next season.

Marc Bartra ai??i?? 6/10

Whenever given a chance, Bartra has shown promise. He lacks the maturity and the experience, but which youth player doesnai??i??t. His excellent display in the win against Celtic has perhaps shown Vilanova a potential first team defender from the academy. However, for the lack of plaudits, it is Tito Vilanova who is to be blamed. When Jose Mourinho can throw a Rafael Varane against world class forwards, Roberto Mancini can do the same with Matija NastasiAi?? ai??i?? why canai??i??t Vilanova do the same with Bartra. In the matches Barcelona played Adriano as centreback, they could easily have handed Bartra a start.

Eric Abidal ai??i?? 10/10

We can only thank Eric for the source of inspiration that he has been. Itai??i??d be impudent and even boorish to even think of rating him.

Martin Montoya ai??i?? 7.5/10

He is the future ai??i?? the life after Dani Alves. His biggest asset is perhaps a very cool head. Not one of the more extrovert, but Bartra goes about his business with dogged determination. His goal against Malaga manifests a fine right foot. With experience and maturity, Montoya should soon be Barcelonaai??i??s and Spainai??i??s first choice right back.

Midfield

Sergio Busquets ai??i?? 8/10

Among the better players this season, Busquets did his job with aplomb at the middle of the pitch. Itai??i??s not his fault that he isnai??i??t a defender and subsequently doesnai??i??t fair well as a make-shift one. Otherwise, without Sergio, the fluidity at the centre of the park isnai??i??t just there.

Xavi ai??i?? 7/10

Heartbeat of this Barcelona but he is on the wane. Compare him to his performances, even 2 years back, one can see the difference. Age is catching up and the fast, high tempo game is perhaps takings its toll on the maestro. Injuries too are becoming a part of him. Itai??i??s time to look beyond Xavi, which isnai??i??t going to happen overnight. Vilanova should start looking for alternatives.

Iniesta ai??i?? 8.5/10

Smooth. Elegant. Brilliant. These sum up Andres Iniesta. Perhaps he was the best player for Barcelona this season, along with Lionel Messi. Don Andres was an ethereal presence on the left side of the Barcelona offense. His 16 assists in the domestic league was a testimony to his utility on the left side of the pitch. And 3 goals are like an icing. At 29, Iniesta is perhaps at the top of his game and with Neymar coming along, the trio of Alba-Iniesta-Neymar on the left should give opponents in Europe some more headache.

Fabregas ai??i?? 8/10

Quite an improvement from his first season. Under Guardiola he was perhaps not played properly, but under Vilanova, he was accommodated in a more direct approach and it reaped benefits. Fabregas may be linked to a lot of clubs this summer, but the fact remains that he will be a vital cog in Vilanovaai??i??s scheme of things come the next season. At 26, he is yet to reach the peak of his abilities as a midfielder, and with 11 goals and 11 assists this season, fans will be hopeful for an even bigger impact next season.

Alex Song ai??i?? 6.5/10

Itai??i??s not his mistake that the Barcelona administration overestimated his abilities. Song is a decent midfielder, and at a club like Arsenal he is perhaps one of the lynchpins, but expecting him to manage a midfield like Barcelonaai??i??s and also to contribute to the defense in the absence of genuine defenders, is a bit too much. In fact, even in midfield, Seydou Keita had a better presence than Alex Song. If next season he doesnai??i??t gel with the team, he will certainly add to Barcelonaai??i??s long list of appalling transfers. However, for the record, it is certainly not Alex Songai??i??s fault that Barcelona chose to invest in him.

Thiago Alcantara ai??i?? 7/10

Occasionally brilliant. Occasionally because he is not used as much as he should be. One of the top players in Masia, Thiago has also shown that he has what it takes to shine at the top level. It is upto Vilanova to exploit the brilliance of Alcantara. With Manchester United, Manchester City and even Real Madrid lining up for the youngsterai??i??s signature, its high time Barcelona understands the worth of Thiago and give him the chance he deserves. Perhaps an amalgamation of Ronaldinho and Iniesta, Alcantara at 22, is certainly the future for Barcelona (or any other club for that matter, should he choose not to continue at the Camp Nou)

Jonathan Dos Santos ai??i?? 4/10

Not many chances came his way, but whatever did, he showed he is far from a finished product. At 23, a lot is expected from players like him, especially with the emergence of stunningly talented players like Gotze, Gundogan, Reus. Dos Santos may find his time running out at the Camp Nou, very soon.

Forward

Pedro ai??i?? 6/10

Clearly one of the under-performers of the season. His performances left much to be desired. One look at him, and it is clearly distinguishable that this Pedro is no longer the one who sidelined the legendary Thierry Henry. 7 goals and 6 assists in the domestic title are a far-cry from his usual effervescence. At 25, the Barcelona administration might give him one more year to impress. Otherwise he might just be offloaded to the nouveau riche clubs of Europe for a hefty sum, which might be invested in other offensive players.

Alexis Sanchez ai??i?? 6/10

Surprisingly, Alexis was better last season. He came from a totally different league and looked to pick up the Barcelona style by the end of last season and fans had subsequently expected a lot from him. He failed to deliver and rumors have it that Barcelona are planning to offload the Chilean. However, Alexis quashed those and claimed to be at Barcelona for the 2013-14 season. With Neymar, his chances might be cut down a bit but he has to impress with whatever comes his way. Otherwise, he might just follow suit with Pedro.

David Villa ai??i?? 6.5/10

Villa has been quite decent, given the serious injury he underwent. However, he is clearly no longer the one that Barcelona paid 34.2 million Euros for. Yes, age usually takes its toll, but in case of Villa, the injury in Japan had an impact too. He is certainly to be offloaded ai??i?? and he needs it. With Neymar coming is, his chances are cut down further and to assure himself a berth in Spainai??i??s national team, he needs to prove his worth to Del Bosque with regular football, which is unlikely at Barcelona.

Cristian Tello ai??i?? 7.5/10

Along with Alcantara, the 21-year old player is certainly the future. Isaac Cuenca, who broke into the first team before Tello, sadly finds himself riddled with injuries, which might just cut short his career, even at such a tender age. Tello has pace and ability to take on defenders, he will need to be physically stronger and improve his ball-control. Next season, with more competition, fans can hope that Tello takes his game to the next level, and emerges as another offensive talent from the youth academy.

Lionel Messi 8.75/10

Certainly the best player for the club this season, (very) marginally ahead of Iniesta, but his inability to shine in crunch games have given purists the chance to question his effectiveness and even his abilities against the top teams in Europe. Even with a serious injury, he has outscored Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madridai??i??s goal-machine, with utter disdain. His star performance will certainly be against AC Milan in the return leg where he led Barcelona to a stunning comeback and even the one against PSG, where he had to come down, with an injury, to help his team to cross the final hurdle.
