No Manchester United supporter (yours truly, included) in his senses would dare question the great Scot’s decisions. But perhaps therein lies the problem. In a club where no individual is greater than the collective cause, Sir Alex Ferguson looms larger than life, and larger than the club.
On any other day a 2-3 win over Chelsea FC would have had Red Devils jumping for joy. After all, Stamford Bridge has never been a happy hunting ground for Manchester United since the Mourinho years. So it was much to the happiness of Manchester United supporters that they found their team leading 0-2 half an hour into the game. But Chelsea are a resilient bunch, and thanks to a moment of madness from Wayne Rooney and the sheer technical brilliance of Juan Mata minutes later Chelsea found themselves back into the game at 1-2. Barely into the second half, Chelsea drew level and at 2-2 a Premier League Classic was in the works.
But then Mark Clattenburg announced his presence ai??i?? sending off Ivanovic (deservedly, most agree) and then Fernando Torres. He piled on the misery by letting an offside goal, from Hernandez, stand. What should have been United’s finest hour was now a potentially embarrassing one.
What followed was standard procedure with games ending this way ai??i?? Chelsea fans and players complaining at the injustice suffered and Di Matteo reiterating all of that in his post-match conference. But this is intended to be a judgment over Fergusonai??i??s post match reaction.
‘It’s his own fault’ – Sir Alex Ferguson quipped blaming Torres for what was an over the top reaction for the foul. Torres didn’t help his cause by holding the wrong leg ai??i?? thereai??i??s bad acting and thereai??i??s wrong acting. Regardless, the striker did not deserve a red and in no way was Ferguson right to insist so, because just across the other end Ashley Young had done exactly the same thing.
And this is why it all goes wrong for Manchester United ai??i?? Ferguson, for all his greatness, never concedes even the most obvious facts. Clattenburg-gate aside, Fergie should know like all of Manchester United fans that we were lucky to escape with 3 points despite having 2 extra men on the field. Yet instead of graciously accepting all 3 points and our fair end of the luck, Fergie chose to rub salt into Chelsea’s wounds by claiming Torres deserved his card.
It was a poor move, because Chelsea are a side that thrive on a sense of injustice. It’s possible Ferguson’s comment egged on the Blues even more, and led to their 5-4 win over Manchester United in the League Cup. Why he chose to give the Blues additional ammunition, is anybody’s guess.
Ferguson’s unwillingness to cede an inch, often sees him act in puzzling fashion. Like when he blatantly demand additional playing time in the defeat to the Spurs. This wins Manchester United no friends. Rival fans have a field day cooking up rumors of Manchester United’s influence over referees.
Nobody seems willing to concede that Manchester United have had equally harsh decisions go against them; so harsh, that those have lead to United losing the EPL title over these decisions. But any such sympathy and goodwill is immediately squandered when Ferguson goes all guns blazing insisting United were right all along.
A managerai??i??s job is to stand by team but the least SAF could do is not stoke further angst by blaming opposition players for their cards and side with refereeing howlers. He could learn from Brendan Rodgers and even Arsene Wenger who you imagine simply would have said ai???We were lucky to earn 3 points, but thatai??i??s footballai???. Maintaining a neutral stance shows graciousness, diplomacy and gives Manchester United the moral high ground to protest future decisions that will go against the ckub.
Football games especially of this magnitude will always have two sets of fans with divided opinions. But what wins the hearts of neutrals is everyone calling a spade as it is. This will not only kill lunatic theories of Ferguson being involved in a conspiracy with the FA, the NASA, the Royal Family and heaven knows who else but this will also help Manchester United when they are wronged.
Not many know that statistics show Manchester United were the team that had the most decisions go against them during last yearai??i??s league. Ferguson is right in seeing yesterdayai??i??s match as a bit of karma since Manchester United have suffered a series of disappointing decisions, most notably in 2002-03, 2007-08, 2009-10 and 2010-11. Two of those decisions almost cost them the league and Ferguson could feel they were due a decision at Stamford Bridge.
But openly proclaiming the validity of a decision even the referees themselves want to forget, and insisting time stop until the game has been rescued is undiplomatic and reduces United’s standing.
Sundayai??i??s game started brilliantly but ended on a sour note thanks to the cards being flung around, increasingly reminding us how Manchester United vs Chelsea is now the Premierai??i??s League El Clasico. It’s not too late to prevent it from descending into the melodramatic farce that the El Clasico can be.
