The picture wasn’t this rosy for Arsenal, sitting just one point behind perennial rivals, Spurs, and three points ahead of Chelsea in the league table. Not many games back were they struggling to keep up with the ‘top four’. Having said that, the Gunners have some interesting fixtures as they move towards the finishing line in the English Premier League. This midweek they travel to Goodison Park for a tasty encounter. They are yet to play Manchester City and Chelsea at home soil, while a daunting trip to the Britannia awaits them at the tail end of the season.

After winning four back-to-back league games, all coming from behind, Arsenal are on a high. Though, it is very important for them to put their feet on the ground and treat every game like a cup final – the age ol’ saying. The Toffees are having a decent cup run of late (in the FA Cup), while they must be a little ‘down’ after their derby loss to Liverpool. They have had a very decent run before that, having not being beaten in nine consecutive league games. Last year in the same fixture, Arsenal got the better of the home side while recently van Persie’s goal somehow helped Arsenal scrape through Everton at the Emirates. Arsenal might be in top form, but Everton are certainly no pushovers.

Only the Manchester clubs and neighbors Liverpool are better on the defensive front – Everton has had a very decent defensive unit this season, their problem however has been the lack of goals. The departure of Louis Saha to Spurs and Arteta to Arsenal hasn’t helped their cause on the creativity and goal-scoring front at all. One big boost for them will be the return of England International Phil Jagielka, who is completely fit to start. Ai??Everton has a good midfield, with Fellaini, Drenthe and Cahill capable of causing a lot of problems to the visitors. They lack in the goal-scoring department, and will be hopeful for midfielders doing the job, even Steven Pienaar, the South African, can be a handful for the Gunners.

Considering the fact that Arsenal has a poor defensive record and Everton a poor offensive record, it will all come down to how the midfield is dominated. The battle between former Everton man Arteta and Fellaini will be an interesting one. David Moyes started Jelavic against Sunderland in the cup, he might be tempted to give him another run, but might as well go for Denis Stracqualursi, who will play upfront on his own. Apart from the men mentioned before, Leon Osman is likely to start wide for the home side. Tony Hibbert and danger-man Leighton Baines will be doing Full Back duties while experienced heads Jagielka and Distin will stand in the center of defence.

After conquering the likes of Newcastle, Spurs, Liverpool and AC Milan, the North London outfit has found a lot of belief and mental strength, which went missing in the initial stages of this year. The form of Tomas Rosicky in the middle of the park has really helped their cause, with van Persie getting a lot of service from him as well as Alex Song, from the deep. One thing that is in Arsenal’s favor compared to the home team, is the amount of rest the players have got, not having to play in any other competition.

The injury news has Andre Santos back among the reckoning, he will get a few minutes in the end of the game if needed, as of now, Gibbs has shown a lot of promise. Jack Wilshere won’t be fit for at least another month. Abou Diaby is still not match fit while Mertesacker is out on a long-term injury. The rest of the team which has been doing so well, picks itself, with the manager needing to decide between Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gervinho, the youngster a bit off-color in recent games. Arsenal rely a lot on the midfield machines that is – Arteta and Song, their work-rate has been immense this season, their contribution quite enormous!
