West London’s pride and joy, Chelsea FC, are supposed to be the flag-bearers of drastic change and nausea-inducing shakeups. Yet for all their addiction to change, the Blues can be relied upon to engage in one particular unchanging traditional winter ritual every year.
And which ritual is that, you ask? Well, it’s ruining a perfectly good start to the season. Of all the big sides, Chelsea FC are usually the quickest off the blocks ai??i?? except during Villas-Boas’ disappointing reign last season. Even when they’re grappling with a new squad, a new manager or a new scandal, the Blues seem to pick themselves up, dust off their lethargy and get their season started like nothing was amiss.
That is until the first sign of a winter chill setting in. And precisely at that point, Chelsea proceed to unsheathe their swords and commit hara kiri in the boardroom, in the locker room, on the field and in full view of the media. Even if Chelsea look determined to avoid the pitfalls of their previous seasons, something usually comes along and upsets the gravy train.
In the past it was a scandal, or an unexpected firing that triggered the miserable winter. These days it’s a refereeing blunder that induces Chelsea’s spiral into the abyss. Things were going swimmingly again for Chelsea ai??i?? a new-look side if there ever was one. For the first time in almost a decade, Chelsea’s spine were no longer the mainstay of the team. John Terry was bracing for the FA’s punishment on grounds of racism, Frank Lampard had made his peace with a smaller role, Didier Drogba had left and Petr Cech was doing nothing to draw attention to himself.
The young brigade who replaced them played the game in a new, almost Barcelona-esque style. Surely, this was Chelsea’s best attempt at staving off the winter blues. And yet, like a bad recurring dream, Chelsea found yet another frigid obstacle upon which to stumble.
Cue Mark Clattenburg. Cue another legal issue. Cue another disappointing result in the league. Suddenly, Chelsea were back in familiar territory ai??i?? the winter wilderness that looks certain to last several weeks, and certain to prise away the early advantage and momentum the Blues worked so hard to sustain.
In troubling fashion, Chelsea have responded the only way they know. Throwing the single point of sanity in the squad under the bus. Roberto di Matteo must have woken up to quite the rude shock to find newspapers talking about Pep Guardiola’s sudden return from exile. The former Barcelona coach has reportedly expressed an interest in taking charge at Stamford Bridge.
Regardless of whether it’s true or not ai??i?? let’s not forget the news has only been attributed to ai???close friendsai??? – it couldn’t have come at a worse time for Chelsea. Now is not the time for the Blues to be keeping one eye on the future, as they continue to negotiate the travails of the present.
Roberto di Matteo has conducted himself admirably. His pedigree may not be enviable, but he did mastermind Chelsea’s long shot campaign to bring the European Champions League home. As Chelsea’s captain wrecked his legacy, as the vice-captain hobbled off with an injury, as Chelsea’s chief striker routinely misfires, di Matteo has been a voice of reason and a reassuring presence in the dressing room.
Going toe-to-toe with Sir Alex Ferguson and putting a believable face to Chelsea’s complaints against Mark Clattenburg, Roberto di Matteo has seemingly not put a single foot wrong in his stint at The Bridge. He’s even gifted Roman Abramovich the playing style the Russian has craved for so long. The Champions League campaign he helped put together, justified Abramovich’s reckless managerial merry go round.
It will rank as one of the Premier League’s most despicable acts of ingratitude, if di Matteo loses his job. Pep Guardiola may have achieved greatness with Barcelona, but his record will forever be qualified by the fact he had the greatest players in the world to call upon. When other clubs bought stars and forced them into a system, Barcelona’s La Masia churned out talents who spent all their waking moments with each other. Guardiola wasn’t the master in charge of a team, he was merely overseeing a group that functioned as a single organism. And yet, di Matteo with a motley crew of misfits beat him.
As some had suggested, Guardiola’s absence would do little to shake the Catalans off their game. Tito Vilanova, his replacement, has shrugged off a resurgent Real Madrid and given his side so much daylight between them and their arch-foes, that Guardiola’s claim to fame has had its shine taken down a notch.
For if his brainchild succeeds so well in his absence, then perhaps Guardiola wasn’t so much a man of the moment, as much as he was a man in the right place at the right time. Which is why Roberto di Matteo’s contribution to Chelsea is so admirable in comparison. Roberto di Matteo was and still is the man for Chelsea’s moment. He didn’t chance upon a side of champions, he made them.
Player power cannot by itself account for Chelsea’s legendary defensive displays last season, when the same defense looked embarrassingly porous even when players were willfully flouting Villas-Boas’ diktats on maintaining a high line. Player power cannot by itself account for Chelsea’s change in style, a feat that Mourinho and Villas-Boas found impossible. In the eternal war for the sympathy of neutral observers around the world, a war Chelsea has lost over the past decade, Roberto di Matteo remains Chelsea’s last, best hope at projecting Chelsea’s soft power as a football club worth supporting. With his zen-like demeanor and an eternally bemused expression, di Matteo strikes you instantly as a congenial friend and someone unlikely to ruffle the dressing room feathers. In a club seemingly never short on trouble, the Italian is the gentle giant holding on to the leash. An unassuming man with a outsized influence.
He might not make for iconic press conferences, act like the quirky mustachioed uncle at Thanksgiving, scribble his battle plans on a notepad or even get you to raise your eyebrow with his. But after the tabloids have had a field day, after the confetti has been swept away, and the broken champagne bottles carefully disposed of, you can be sure there will be one man quietly at work. Reshaping the Blues for the challenges of this next decade, and taking special care not to make a spectacle of himself.
The time has come for Chelsea to show itself worthy of Roberto di Matteo. And not the other way around.
