Brentford in transfer tussle to sign Mohamed Ali Zoma, West Ham United failed with summer bid

A strong spell in Germany has put Mohamed Ali Zoma firmly on the radar of clubs across several major European leagues.

The 22-year-old has continued to develop at 1. FC Nurnberg, with his versatility and attacking output now attracting growing interest ahead of the January transfer window. According to Fussball News, Brentford and Bournemouth are among the Premier League clubs tracking the Italian, while AS Roma, Napoli, Marseille, RC Lens, and Paris FC have also been monitoring his progress.

Zoma’s emergence is particularly notable given his decision to remain in Germany despite previous opportunities to step up to the Bundesliga. Under Miroslav Klose, the attacker has developed into an increasingly important figure and his progress has now generated interest well beyond the second tier.

Brentford face seven way battle after West Ham bid

Brentford’s interest could develop into a serious pursuit, but they face competition from six other clubs and a demanding seller. With Kevin Schade a target for several high-profile clubs, they may need a replacement.

Zoma can operate as an attacking midfielder, second striker or on either wing, with his acceleration and dribbling allowing him to attack defenders directly. His ability to contribute from different positions is one of the qualities that has made him attractive to clubs looking for attacking depth.

West Ham already tested Nurnberg’s resolve during the summer. The Hammers reportedly submitted a €20 million offer, but it was rejected. Nurnberg are now understood to want more than €30 million before considering negotiations over a January departure. That represents a significant increase on Zoma’s estimated €20 million market value, but his contract until June 2029 gives the German club little reason to compromise.

Brentford and Bournemouth therefore have to decide whether Zoma’s potential justifies a substantial investment, while Roma and Napoli offer the prospect of a return to Italian football and no formal January bids have yet been confirmed.

Brentford could be the right next step

Zoma’s appeal lies in the fact that he does not need to be pigeonholed into one position. For a club such as Brentford, that versatility could be particularly valuable, allowing him to provide competition across the attacking line rather than occupying a single squad position.

The bigger question is whether Nurnberg’s €30 million-plus valuation is justified. Zoma has made significant progress, but moving from the German second tier to becoming a reliable Premier League performer would still represent a substantial step.

Brentford have generally built their recruitment strategy around identifying players before their value reaches its peak. Zoma fits that philosophy, although paying more than €30 million would mean taking a considerably larger financial gamble than simply buying an emerging prospect.

With Roma and Napoli also keen, a move back to Italy could offer Zoma a more familiar footballing environment, but Brentford could provide the clearest pathway to regular top-level football. If his development continues under Klose, Nürnberg may soon have to choose between keeping an increasingly valuable asset and cashing in at a potentially record-breaking price.
