Leon Goretzka has verbally agreed to join Aston Villa on a free transfer, with Unai Emery playing a key role in convincing the German international.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Goretzka is set to join Aston Villa on a Bosman deal after reaching a verbal agreement with the club. The seven-time Bundesliga winner and former Bayern Munich star is now viewed as a major addition for the Birmingham club, with Emery playing an important role in persuading him to make the move.
Aston Villa have been searching for midfield reinforcements following several key departures and injuries. First, Youri Tielemans left for Manchester United, which was considered a significant blow to Emery’s squad. The long-term knee injury suffered by Amadou Onana then made the situation even more difficult.
Furthermore, Boubacar Kamara is only just returning from a long-term injury, meaning Villa had a clear need for another addition in midfield. They did sign Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers and had also been pursuing Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich.
However, talks with Bayern broke down despite Palhinha’s desire to join Aston Villa. The Portuguese midfielder was viewed as an important target, and although Villa reportedly revived negotiations, he has since agreed to join Benfica on a permanent deal.
Aston Villa to sign Leon Goretzka
Aston Villa recently identified free agent Goretzka as a key target, with talks subsequently taking place between the club and him. Romano stated that Emery played a key role in convincing Goretzka to join Aton Villa after speaking directly with him.
The West Midlands club are planning to complete the medical examination and contract signing next week, with the necessary documents already prepared.
Will Goretzka suit Villa?
Goretzka enjoyed an outstanding career at Bayern Munich, making more than 300 appearances for the club and contributing over 100 goals and assists. He won seven Bundesliga titles, lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy and gained extensive international experience with Germany.
The 31-year-old would bring considerable experience, physicality and composure to Aston Villa’s midfield, particularly following Tielemans’ departure and Onana’s injury. Goretzka attracted interest from several major clubs earlier this year after it became clear that he would leave Bayern.
However, joining Aston Villa and playing Champions League football could represent an appealing next step in his career. His defensive and attacking contributions will deepen Emery’s midfield options. Goretzka is expected to complete his medical and sign a contract next week.
