Chelsea make Diogo Costa approach

Premier League heavyweights Chelsea have reportedly contacted Diogo Costa over a possible move in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by reputed Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Diogo Costa is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Portuguese international is also a target for Manchester City heading into the summer transfer window. However, the Blues have made the first move to secure the services of the FC Porto goalkeeper.

Diogo Costa and his rise in the last few years

Diogo Costa has established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world in the last few years. A native of Rothrist, he was eligible to represent Switzerland on the international stage but chose Portugal as his national side. He has been with FC Porto for nearly a decade and a half, joining their youth division in 2010.

The 24-year-old progressed through the ranks at FC Porto before making his first-team debut in September 2019. The Portuguese international has been a regular for his club since the 2021/22 season and has turned out over 150 times thus far for Porto, keeping 64 clean sheets while conceding 129 goals.

Meanwhile, Costa’s progress in the last few years has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. A move to the Premier League might be on the cards, with Chelsea and Manchester City vying for the signature of the FC Porto goalkeeper.

Premier League move on the cards?

Chelsea’s interest in Diogo Costa is understandable. The Blues are scouring the market for a shot-stopper heading into the summer transfer window due to the uncertainties surrounding the future of Robert Sanchez. The Spaniard has failed to make his mark at Stamford Bridge and might leave this summer. So, Costa has emerged as a target for Chelsea.

As for Manchester City, they might sanction the departure of Ederson Moraes in the summer transfer window if the Brazilian international pushes for a departure. In addition, Stefan Ortega’s long-term future at the Etihad is not set in stone. So, it behoves Manchester City to invest in a goalkeeper, making Costa a viable target.

However, Manchester City might fall behind in the race to sign the 24-year-old Portuguese international, with Chelsea establishing contact with him. With FC Porto open to a sale under the right circumstances, a summer move might see the light of day.
