PSG rival Liverpool in Alan Varela pursuit

Liverpool have been linked with a summer move for Argentine midfielder Alan Varela, but they will face competition from PSG.

According to French publication Foot Mercato, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are keen on signing 21-year-old FC Porto midfielder Alan Varela. The Argentine midfield sensation wii cost around €70 million, the value of his release clause.

Varela is regarded as a prodigious young talent with a big future ahead of him, and he could develop into a top-class player for club and country. He has been linked with multiple Premier League clubs.

It is no secret that Liverpool need a quality defensive midfielder. The Argentine has thus emerged as a viable target and can be a solid long-term investment for them. They tried to sign several defensive midfielders during the summer transfer window. But the Reds failed with substantial offers for players like Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

The Merseyside outfit ended up signing the Wataru Endo. While the Japanese international has done quite well this season, Liverpool need a younger alternative who can sort out the defensive midfield role for the foreseeable future. Varela could be the ideal partner for players like Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool are prepared to pay €70 million for the player. They were willing to pay a lot more for players like Caicedo, and it is fair to assume that Liverpool have the resources to sign the player.

The opportunity to move to the Premier League can be quite tempting for most footballers. Liverpool will hope players like Mac Allister can convince his compatriot to move to Anfield in the summer. Signing a quality defensive midfielder would complete the Liverpool midfield for the foreseeable future.

Varela is still quite young and is likely to improve with coaching and experience. Joining a big club Liverpool will help him improve further and fulfil is tremendous potential. He is likely to get ample opportunities as the Premier League club as well. The reported asking price might seem like a premium right now, but Varela has the ability to justify the investment in the coming seasons.
