High-flying La Liga title contenders Girona reportedly approached Mikayil Faye over a possible move, but the Barcelona wonderkid rejected them.

According to reputed French journalist Santi Aouna, Mikayil Faye is the subject of interest from Girona. The high-flying La Liga title contenders approached the Barcelona wonderkid over a possible loan move in the January transfer window. He was also a target for Deportivo Alaves. But the 19-year-old has turned them down.

Who is Mikayil Faye?

Mikayil Faye has only been in Europe for 12 months but has seen his stock skyrocket during that period. The Senegalese wonderkid spent most of his formative years in his homeland before joining NK Kustosija in February 2023. He went from strength to strength at the Croatian club and attracted the interest of many high-profile clubs.

Chelsea had been among Faye’s suitors but missed on his signature due to small margins, as he joined Barcelona. The Blaugrana assigned him to Barcelona Atletic for the 2023/24 season, and he has hit the ground running at the Catalan club. The 19-year-old has been a fixture at the back for Barcelona’s reserve side, turning out 16 times thus far.

A Player in Demand

The youngster’s progress at the Catalan club has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many well-known clubs. Recent reports have linked him with Chelsea and many other bigwigs. But he is also a target for La Liga outfits, including Girona.

The White and Reds have emerged as shock title challengers in La Liga this season, running Real Madrid close at the top of the table. They have also steered clear of regular contenders like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. But Girona will need clever signings to sustain the bid for the coveted trophy.

Recent reports have linked Girona with many players, including Pedro Porro. Mikayil Faye is an intriguing target for the Catalan club, and they approached the 19-year-old. But the Barcelona wonderkid has knocked back the approach from the high-flying La Liga title contenders.

Faye had also emerged as a target for struggling La Liga outfit Deportivo Alaves. But he is happy and content representing Barcelona Atletic, and a January move is not on the cards. So, Girona and Alaves must look elsewhere to bolster their defensive units.
