Atletico Madrid will reportedly compete with Barcelona in the race to sign 29-year-old Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Guido Rodriguez is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The 29-year-old is in the final year of his contract with Real Betis and might leave the Andalusian club in January. Meanwhile, the World Cup-winning midfielder is also a target for Barcelona.

Guido Rodriguez has established himself as one of the best midfielders in La Liga since joining Real Betis in January 2020. The stint with Los Verdiblancos has been his first exposure in Europe. So, the Argentine international has acquitted himself well during his spell at the Benito Villamarin Stadium.

The 29-year-old has turned out over 150 times thus far for Real Betis, chipping in with eight goals and four assists. Meanwhile, Rodriguez was part of the squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup. As for the player’s future at the club level, he has left Real Betis in a spot of bother after entering the final year of his contract.

Rodriguez’s situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of high-profile clubs across Europe. Recent reports have linked the World Cup winner with Premier League bigwigs like Manchester United and Arsenal. But La Liga heavyweights Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also in the mix.

The most recent update suggested that Barcelona had ruled out a move for Rodriguez. But according to SPORT, the reigning La Liga champions remain in the race to secure his services. That is hardly surprising, considering they are in the market for a holding midfielder. With Oriol Romeu only being a short-term solution for Barcelona, the Argentine international can replace him.

As for Atletico Madrid, the Colchoneros are scouring the market for midfield reinforcement. Recent reports have suggested that Saul Niguez, Marcos Llorente, and Thomas Lemar face an uncertain future at the Civitas Metropolitano. They are interested in players like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Youri Tielemans. And Guido Rodriguez is also a viable target.

With Rodriguez in the final year of his contract with Real Betis, a cut-price January move might be on the cards. That can play into Atletico Madrid’s hands, with Barcelona not in a position to spend any money on a new signing this winter.
