Barcelona will not launch the offensive to sign 29-year-old World Cup winner Guido Rodriguez from Real Betis in January.

According to a report by Spanish journalist Javi Miguel, Guido Rodriguez no longer features on Barcelona’s radar over a possible move in the January transfer window. The Catalan giants remain in the market for a midfielder. But Giovani Lo Celso has more prominence on Barcelona’s wishlist than his compatriot.

Guido Rodriguez has established himself as one of the best midfielders in La Liga since joining Real Betis from Club America in January 2020. The Argentine international had not played for a European club before his stint with Real Betis began. So, his progress at the Andalusian club is remarkable.

The 29-year-old is a mainstay in the middle of the park for Los Verdiblancos and was also a part of his nation’s World Cup-winning squad last year. Meanwhile, Rodriguez has been solid thus far this season, managing a goal in seven appearances. The player’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs.

Widespread reports in the last summer transfer windows have linked the World Cup winner with well-known clubs in the Premier League and Serie A. Barcelona also considered signing him this past summer. While a move did not materialise, he remained on the Catalan club’s radar.

Meanwhile, recent reports have pointed to Real Betis scrambling to extend Rodriguez’s contract to ward off Barcelona. The Andalusian club will now have a shot in the arm, with Javi Miguel claiming that Barcelona will not launch the offensive to sign the 29-year-old in the January transfer window.

The reigning La Liga champions are keen on signing a midfielder this winter. But Javi Miguel has suggested that Giovani Lo Celso is on Barcelona’s radar instead of Rodriguez. As for the Real Betis midfielder, he will likely remain at the Benito Villamarin Stadium unless a new suitor emerges.

The 29-year-old World Cup winner could have been a top-notch addition to the Barcelona midfield. But the Argentine international has now fallen behind his compatriot in their wishlist for the January transfer window. So, a winter departure seems unlikely.
