Barcelona will pursue 29-year-old Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez to replace Sergio Busquets if they fail to sign Sofyan Amrabat.

According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, Guido Rodriguez is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The 29-year-old Real Betis midfielder is a contingency option to replace Sergio Busquets. And Barcelona will prefer to sign Sofyan Amrabat as the successor to the veteran midfielder.

Guido Rodriguez spent the majority of his career in the Americas before finally arriving in Europe three years ago. And the Argentine international has established himself as one of the best midfielders in La Liga since joining Real Betis. At the same time, he has been a regular for La Albiceleste.

The 29-year-old was a part of the squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in December. Meanwhile, Rodriguez has turned out nearly 150 times for Real Betis, chipping in with seven goals and three assists. But the player will enter the final 12 months of his contract in July, with his situation alerting Barcelona.

Barcelona will enter the market for a midfielder in the summer amid Sergio Busquets’s advancing age. The former Spanish international is approaching the end of his glittering career and is no longer cut out for a long season. And the Barcelona captain might even depart from Spotify Camp Nou at the end of the season.

Such a situation has forced Barcelona to scour the market for a long-term successor to Busquets. And Sofyan Amrabat has reportedly emerged as the top target for the Blaugrana. The Moroccan international dreams of joining Barcelona. But signing Amrabat will not be straightforward.

Fiorentina’s asking price will be a stumbling block for Barcelona, with La Viola uninterested in a sale. Guido Rodriguez has thus emerged as an alternative to Amrabat if the Catalan giants fail to sign the Moroccan. And the World Cup winner’s contract situation makes him an appealing target.

With the 29-year-old in the final 18 months of his contract, a cut-price deal might be on the cards. But a move for Rodriguez will only be possible if Barcelona cannot secure Amrabat’s services. So it will be interesting to see if the Catalan giants pursue the Argentine international in the coming months.
