Bayer Leverkusen will not sell 21-year-old Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie this summer after blocking an approach from Liverpool.

According to a report by Football Insider, Piero Hincapie is the subject of interest from Liverpool. But the Reds have failed with an approach for the Bayer Leverkusen defender. And the Bundesliga outfit will not part ways with the 21-year-old in the summer transfer window.

Piero Hincapie has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga since joining Bayer Leverkusen from CA Talleres. The Ecuadorian international spent his formative years in his homeland. But he rose to prominence during a short stint in Argentina before moving to BayArena in July 2021.

The 21-year-old took little time to establish a foothold at the Bundesliga club. And he has turned out 76 times thus far for Bayer Leverkusen, chipping in with three goals and two assists. Hincapie’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with several high-profile clubs setting their sights on him.

Widespread reports have linked the youngster with Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Real Madrid. But the most recent updates have pointed to Liverpool being the only serious suitor pursuing Hincapie’s signature. And there had been suggestions that the Merseyside club could sign him for €70 million.

The Reds have lined up with a back four thus far this season instead of a central defensive trifecta. But with Joel Matip on the wrong side of 30 and Joe Gomez becoming a peripheral figure, Liverpool can do with a top-class centre-back. In addition, Virgil van Dijk is in his thirties, with his performance levels dropping in the past year.

Hincapie thus emerged as a viable target for Liverpool in the last few weeks. And the 21-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender can be the long-term central defensive partner for Ibrahima Konate. But the Bundesliga club will not entertain any offers for the young centre-back in the remaining days of the summer transfer window.

The report by Football Insider has claimed that the German giants have blocked an approach from Liverpool for Hincapie. So it will be interesting to see if the Reds set their sights elsewhere to bolster their central defensive options in the coming days.
