Chelsea continue their relentless process of signing young stars of unknown quantity from South America. Their experiments have not seen concrete results, with Andrey Santos being the only one to show promise since pre-season.

This summer, there have been more incomings, especially in the younger age category. Many Chelsea fans have been baffled by their club’s strategy. For instance, they have chased Moises Caicedo and a new striker. But neither player is close to arriving, and instead, they are bringing in players not deemed good enough for the first team.

It is part of Chelsea’s plan to send these youngsters like Angelo Gabriel, Lesley Ugochukwu and now Deivid Washington on loan to Strasbourg. As the Blues close in on the Santos star, they could have spent over €45 million on signings that would leave for France.

Now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed news of an agreement between the two clubs for a package of €20 million. He also points to later decision on sending the 18-year-old out on loan to Strasbourg.

Washington, the 18-year-old Brazilian wonderkid from Santos, was the subject of an offer from Chelsea. Fabrizio Romano, who broke the news, has been confident the Blues are the player’s preferred choice in this window despite rival interest.

Chelsea’s process might have slowed down due to AS Monaco’s recent interest in the 18-year-old Brazilian wonderkid. Some other reports insisted Washington was keen on joining the French giants, which may have alerted the Blues.

Things could have already moved by then, and Washington might have signed on as a Chelsea player. Romano had insisted the original plan was to send the 18-year-old Brazilian wonderkid on loan to Strasbourg, which might remain the case.

In truth, this is a player of unknown quantity, and not many are able to tell how good he is for the Stamford Bridge outfit. That is not to say he will not succeed, but spending big money on prospective talents will come across as financially risky for Chelsea.
