Mason Mount has officially ended his long association with Chelsea, with Manchester United paying a base fee of £55 million.

Manchester United have made an official statement to confirm that they have secured the services of Mason Mount. The 24-year-old leaves Chelsea after an association of 18 years. Meanwhile, he has signed a five-year contract running until June 30, 2028, with Manchester United shelling out a base fee of £55 million. The agreement also includes add-ons worth £5 million.

Mason Mount has only known the Chelsea way of life through his professional career thus far. The Englishman joined the West London club as a six-year-old in 2005 before rising through the ranks. And he was a rare success story of an academy graduate establishing a foothold in the first-team squad when he became a regular.

Since then, the 24-year-old has paved the way for several prospects to break into the Chelsea first-team squad. And Mount turned out nearly 200 times for the club while chipping in with 33 goals and 37 assists. But the creative midfielder’s stint with Chelsea has ended, with Manchester United securing his services. And Mount has expressed his delight upon completing the move.

He said, “It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies.”

“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here.”

Mount first became a hot property midway through the 2022/23 season when it emerged that negotiations over a new contract were going nowhere. And as the months progressed, Chelsea’s chances of keeping hold of the English international decreased. That is when Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United started showing interest in him.

Soon, Manchester United remained as the only serious suitor vying for Mount’s signature. But talks between Chelsea and the Red Devils became protracted as the weeks passed. A frustrated Manchester United submitted a take-it-or-leave-it offer for the 24-year-old. And the two parties finally arrived at a middle ground.

Chelsea and Manchester United finally sealed the agreement over a deal for Mount last week. And the transfer is now official, with the Englishman moving to Old Trafford. Meanwhile, widespread reports have claimed that the Red Devils have paid a base fee of £55 million to land the player, who has signed a five-year contract.

He will now look to kick-start his new adventure and guide Manchester United to a trophy-laden period in the coming years. As for Chelsea, the Blues have lost a dependable performer who was arguably their best player in the last four years. So he will be a big loss for the West London club.
