Mason Mount is on the verge of joining Manchester United, who will pay a base fee of £55 million to sign the Chelsea playmaker.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United and Chelsea have finally sealed the deal for Mason Mount. The Red Devils are paying a base fee of £55 million for the 24-year-old. The agreement also includes add-ons worth £5 million. Meanwhile, the player will sign a long-term contract running until June 30, 2028.

Mason Mount had to bide his time before becoming a regular for Chelsea. But he was a path-breaker at Stamford Bridge as Frank Lampard trusted him and a few other academy graduates to become assets for the West London club. And the English international eventually became a pivotal figure for Chelsea.

The 24-year-old has turned out nearly 200 times for Chelsea, chipping in with 33 goals and 37 assists. But Mount’s future has been the subject of speculation for a long time as he has a little over a year remaining on his Chelsea deal. And he was not ready to commit his future to the West London club. Such a situation alerted several high-profile clubs, including Manchester United.

Manchester United went into the post-season of the 2022/23 campaign knowing they needed a midfielder. And several options emerged on their radar, ranging from holding midfielders to playmakers. But after a few weeks, Mason Mount became a top target for Manchester United.

The Red Devils were so eager to secure Mount’s services that they submitted three bids to land him. But Chelsea remained stubborn about the asking price and rejected all three proposals. And they initially wanted around £80 million to part ways with the Englishman. But Manchester United made it clear that they would not meet Chelsea’s valuation.

They submitted a take-it-or-leave-it proposal to Chelsea earlier this week. And the latest update suggested the Blues were ready to compromise to seal the deal with Manchester United. And the two clubs have now finalised the agreement, with Manchester United shelling out a base fee of £55 million.

In addition, they will pay £5 million in add-ons if they meet certain conditions. Meanwhile, a further update from Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Mount will sign a five-year contract running until June 30, 2028. So with a package worth £60 million finalised, Mount is on the cusp of ending his long association with Chelsea to join Manchester United.
