Newcastle United line up Marc Cucurella swoop

Newcastle United will reportedly look to sign Spanish wide defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Marc Cucurella is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Spaniard has not justified the outlay of £60 million on him from last summer. But the Magpies view the Chelsea wide man as a long-term left-back solution.

Marc Cucurella has endured a topsy-turvy ride since arriving in England two years ago. The 24-year-old joined Brighton & Hove Albion from Getafe in August 2021 and enjoyed an incredible debut season with the Seagulls. And he was so good that he won the club’s Player of the Year award for 2021/22. In addition, Chelsea prised him away from Brighton last summer.

The West London club shelled out £60 million to secure Cucurella’s services last summer. But the Spanish international has not justified Chelsea’s heavy outlay. And he turned out 33 times across all competitions this past season, chipping in with three assists. But despite the player’s struggles, his stock remains fairly high, with Newcastle United interested in him.

At Newcastle United, Eddie Howe used Dan Burn as his first-choice left-back this past season. And Matt Targett’s stature has reduced, as he was a backup option for the Newcastle United boss. But Howe wants a full-back better suited to his demands, compelling the Tyneside club to scour the market.

The Magpies have thus shown interest in several left-backs, including Kieran Tierney. And while the Arsenal defender will be a much better option, Cucurella has also emerged as a viable target. Newcastle United will look to secure a cut-price deal to land the Chelsea wide man.

Meanwhile, the Blues are ready to part ways with the 24-year-old. But Chelsea will unlikely recoup anything close to the £60 million they paid to land the Spaniard. And if Cucurella rediscovers his Brighton form at St. James’ Park, Newcastle United will have secured a bargain.

The Tyneside club will make mega investments into the first-team squad to get ready for a crack at the UEFA Champions League. And it will be interesting to see if Cucurella arrives from Chelsea to bolster the Newcastle United squad this summer.
