Chelsea might offload 24-year-old Spanish wide man Marc Cucurella, whose market value is €40 million, this summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Marc Cucurella might not be at Chelsea for much longer. The Blues are considering cashing in on the 24-year-old in the summer transfer window. And they might have to suffer a tremendous loss if they offload the wide man in the coming weeks.
Marc Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer amid much fanfare. The Blues were desperate to secure the Spaniard’s services and paid the big bucks to land him. And after he won Brighton’s Player of the Year for 2021/22, it was hardly surprising that he was a hot property.
But the 24-year-old has failed to hit the ground running, personifying Chelsea’s struggles this past season. Cucurella’s performances have been unconvincing for the most part, and he became a rotation option in the second half of the 2022/23 campaign. And the wide man managed only three assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.
While judging a Chelsea player in a season that had four different managers is harsh, Cucurella’s performances were dreadful. And with Mauricio Pochettino taking charge at Stamford Bridge in July, the Spanish international faces an uncertain future at Chelsea. The report claims the Blues are considering cashing in on him.
Cucurella’s market value has fallen to €40 million in the last nine months. And with his stock plummeting, Chelsea might have to take a loss on the investment they made less than a year ago. But the report does not mention any prospective suitors to secure the Spaniard’s services this summer.
Meanwhile, from Chelsea’s perspective, lightening the wage bill is necessary after a heavy outlay in the last two transfer windows. But Cucurella is not the only wide man facing an uncertain future at Chelsea. The Blues have also named their asking price for Ian Maatsen, a target for Burnley.
Meanwhile, recent reports have linked Lewis Hall with a move to Crystal Palace. So a summer clearout might feature the departures of three left-backs. And it will be interesting to see if Cucurella’s stint with Chelsea will end after just one season.
