Chelsea will reportedly compete with Arsenal in the race to sign 20-year-old French striker Elye Wahi from Montpellier this summer.

According to a report by Marco Giordano, Elye Wahi is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are preparing an offer to sign the 20-year-old Montpellier striker, who has enjoyed a breakthrough 2022/23 campaign. Meanwhile, the youngster is also a target for Arsenal.

Elye Wahi spent his formative years with several French clubs, most of them at his boyhood side JS Suresnes. And after passing through the academies at SM Caen and FC Montfermeil, he graduated from Montpellier’s youth division. The Frenchman made his first-team debut for Montpellier as a 17-year-old in December 2020.

Since then, the 20-year-old has come leaps and bounds, first becoming a regular last season. And Wahi has established himself as one of the best strikers in Ligue 1 this term, amassing 17 goals and six assists in 32 appearances. And the youngster’s progress has captured the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea.

Arsenal’s interest in Wahi is intriguing, considering they signed a striker last summer. And with Gabriel Jesus unlikely to lose his footing next season, it is unclear how the Montpellier striker will fit into the scheme of things at Arsenal. Nonetheless, the Gunners remain keen on signing the 20-year-old.

Recent reports have also claimed that the North London giants have made their move for him. But Arsenal will face stiff competition from Chelsea in the race to sign the French striker. And like the Gunners, the Blues are preparing an offer to land the youngster in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea will head into the market in the summer transfer window searching for a striker. That is because the West London giants have been woefully short of goals this season. And with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang likely to leave, Mauricio Pochettino will not have a recognised striker at his disposal. Wahi has thus emerged as a viable target for Chelsea.

It will be interesting to see if Chelsea’s emergence in the race to sign Wahi changes the equation. But with Arsenal offering UEFA Champions League football, the 20-year-old will have a difficult decision to make this summer.
