Real Madrid might prioritise signing Joao Cancelo from Manchester City this summer, with a deal worth €60 million possible.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Joao Cancelo is a top target for Real Madrid for the summer transfer window. And a deal worth €60 million with Manchester City might be possible. The Portuguese international is currently on loan at Bayern Munich.

Joao Cancelo is at a crossroads in his career after losing the trust of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The 28-year-old was among the best full-backs in the world not too long ago. But he has endured a frustrating few months since returning from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese international joined Bayern Munich on loan for the rest of the season. But he has failed to nail down the right-back berth at the Allianz Arena. And Cancelo’s market value has fallen to €60 million. But his stock remains high, with several high-profile clubs, including Real Madrid, interested in him.

Interestingly, Real Madrid rejected the chance to sign the Manchester City star on loan in the January transfer window. But Carlo Ancelotti is an admirer of the player’s qualities and reportedly wants him in the Real Madrid squad. The reigning La Liga champions are thus considering landing him this summer.

The 28-year-old can potentially be a long-term solution on either flank for Real Madrid. Considering Cancelo revelled as a left-back at Manchester City, he can be an alternative to Ferland Mendy. On the other hand, with Dani Carvajal blowing hot and cold in the last few seasons, he can be the Spaniard’s successor.

But the deal won’t be cheap, although the Merengues reckon they can seal an agreement for €60 million. Considering Bayern Munich’s purchase option is reportedly higher than €60 million, a move worth the said amount might be worth it for Real Madrid.

But it will be interesting to see if Pep Guardiola decides to keep the player at Manchester City beyond the summer. If not, a move to Real Madrid will be on the cards for the Portuguese international. For now, he will concentrate on a solid end to a frustrating 2022/23 season.
