Real Madrid reportedly turned down the chance to sign Portuguese international Joao Cancelo from Manchester City in January.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid had the opportunity to sign Joao Cancelo in the January transfer window. But Los Blancos rejected the offer to land the player, who has a market value of €70 million. The Portuguese international eventually joined Bayern Munich on loan from Manchester City.

Joao Cancelo was always a highly-rated full-back during his days at Benfica and Valencia. But he finally rose to prominence after joining Juventus in August 2018. And the 28-year-old saw his stock skyrocket upon moving to Manchester City a year later. He subsequently became a pivotal figure for the Premier League champions.

But Cancelo saw his stature reduce after the World Cup break. And the player reportedly had a run-in with Pep Guardiola, who sanctioned his loan exit in January. The Portuguese international joined Bayern Munich on deadline day and delivered an assist in his first game. But he could have joined Real Madrid instead of Bayern Munich.

Intermediaries offered Cancelo to Real Madrid before he joined Bayern Munich. But Los Blancos quickly rebuffed the opportunity to sign the Portuguese international from Manchester City. That is because the reigning La Liga champions do not currently have any plans to sign a right-back this year.

The latest update comes after recent reports suggested that the Merengues were tracking Cancelo’s situation. And with Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez blowing hot and cold, it behoves Real Madrid to scour the market for a right-back. But they will unlikely sign a right-back in the summer either.

That is because Real Madrid will sign Vinicius Tobias permanently from Shakhtar Donetsk. And the Brazilian prospect might be the long-term right-back solution for Real Madrid. Meanwhile, a report by AS claims that Cancelo wanted to move to Spain. And Carlo Ancelotti also liked the Portuguese international’s profile. But the Merengues were not interested in signing him.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich will have the option to sign Cancelo permanently for €70 million in the summer. That is his market value, and it will be interesting to see if the Bundesliga champions trigger the clause. As for Real Madrid, the Spanish champions remain uninterested in bolstering Ancelotti’s right-back options.
