Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Portuguese international defender Joao Cancelo, valued at €70 million by Manchester City, this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Joao Cancelo is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions want to bolster their right-back options in the summer transfer window. And the Portuguese international, valued at €70 million by Manchester City, has emerged as a target.

Joao Cancelo has enjoyed a stunning rise to stardom in the last half a decade. He has represented three European bigwigs during this period, those being Juventus, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich. And his stock particularly skyrocketed during his stint with the reigning Premier League champions.

But Cancelo’s stature at Manchester City had reduced after the World Cup before he joined Bayern Munich on loan in January. And the Portuguese international has enjoyed a decent spell thus far, chipping in with one goal and four assists in eight outings. But Bayern Munich will not pay €70 million to sign the 28-year-old, with the situation alerting Real Madrid.

Real Madrid had the chance to sign Cancelo in the January transfer widow. But they snubbed the opportunity, even though Carlo Ancelotti was keen on having the player in his squad. However, the Manchester City loanee has emerged as a potential target for the summer transfer window.

Real Madrid will likely spend big sums to bolster the squad in the summer transfer window. Amid the threat of ending the 2022/23 campaign without a trophy, Florentino Perez is ready to loosen the purse strings. And the right-back spot might become a priority area to reinforce amid Dani Carvajal’s inconsistencies.

In addition, Lucas Vazquez has blown hot and cold, while Alvaro Odriozola does not feature in Ancelotti’s plans. So Real Madrid will need to sign an alternative and a long-term successor to Carvajal. Cancelo is thus a viable target for Los Blancos heading into the summer transfer window.

While Bayern Munich might not pay €70 million to sign the Portuguese international, Real Madrid can. But the Merengues might face stiff competition in the race to secure his services, with Barcelona also interested. And it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the player.
