Chelsea seeking to sign Matheus Nunes ahead of top four rivals Liverpool

According to The Daily Mail, London giants Chelsea are keen to beat Liverpool to the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Nunes.

The Portuguese international made the move to The Molineux from Sporting CP last summer and has been one of the few positive things to come out of the Midlands club this season. In 22 appearances for the club, he has made one assist and is quickly establishing himself as a key cog in the midfield.

His performances have not gone unnoticed with Chelsea and Liverpool both keeping close tabs. Both sides are going through a season of transition and will need to revamp their midfield rosters sooner rather than later.

Liverpool are overly dependent on Jordan Henderson and a plethora of players who are either ageing or burnt out. More so, the injuries to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita further limit Jurgen Klopp’s options. The need to bring in new midfielders has been clear for a while and is long overdue.

Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham is the club’s top summer target, but the Englishman alone will not be enough to plug their gaps in midfield. Adding Nunes to the roster will make the outfit far more agile and dynamic in the middle of the pitch.

Chelsea are also in a similar boat and could lose Jorginho and N’Golo Kante for free in the summer. This will leave a huge void in terms of quality and leadership in the midfield that needs to be accounted for. Mason Mount’s future is also up in the air, and leaves the Blues with few proven options in the middle of the park.

Todd Boehly and co have been heavily linked with moves for Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, but are yet to reach a breakthrough in negotiations with SL Benfica and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively. More so, neither player will come cheap and will require significant investment.

Nunes is significantly cheaper and is also Premier League proven. Liverpool pulled out of the race to sign Nunes last summer. Whether Chelsea will pull another Mykhailo Mudryk and steal the player at the 11th hour remains to be seen. Should that happen, the Reds will have only themselves to blame.
