Mason Mount is nearing the end of his Chelsea contract, but the two parties have not been able to agree on an extension yet.

According to Dean Jones from Give Me Sport, Mason Mount is stalling on signing a new Chelsea. contract. And the 23-year-old midfielder wants to understand the Blues’ strategy going forward before committing his future to the club.

Mount has a contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2024, and the Blues are keen on keeping him at the club for the long term. The two parties have been in talks regarding a contract extension since the summer, but there has not been a breakthrough yet.

The 23-year-old is one of the most talented players at the west London club right now. So losing him in the near future would be a major blow for Chelsea.

Jones said, “I think it’s interesting that he hasn’t just signed the contract and that he is actually holding out a little bit.

“Maybe he just wants to wait and see what the actual strategy is here. Speaking to someone at the weekend about how these things are working, they said it is quite a complicated strategy that they’re putting in place.

“They’re trying to sign three different tiers of player at the moment, all at the same time, and trying to just make the immediate future, the near future and the far future all come into place at one time.”

The Chelsea academy graduate has firmly established himself as a key player for the first team over the last few seasons and he has a big future ahead of him. Mount is yet to reach his peak years and is likely to get even better with coaching and experience. Chelsea cannot afford to lose him at this stage of his career. So the Blues must do everything in their power to tie him down to a long-term contract.

The English midfielder has been a key player for Graham Potter since his arrival and he has started every Premier League game since then. He currently earns around £80k a week, and he will probably be looking for a hefty pay-rise if he commits his future to the club.

Mount has been Chelsea’s main source of creativity and goals from the midfield, and he deserves a lucrative contract for his performances in recent seasons. Previously, there have been reports that Manchester United are keeping tabs on the midfielder’s situation, and it will be interesting to see how things develop over the next few months.

A player of his quality will have no shortage of suitors if he wants to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer. Although Mount has a contract until the end of next season, it would be wise of Chelsea to consider selling him in the summer if he refuses to sign an extension. Losing him on a free transfer at the end of his contract in 2024 would be a devastating blow for the Blues.
