N’Golo Kante is reportedly closing in on signing a new contract with Chelsea, thus handing a blow to Barcelona.

Fabrizio Romano has told Caught Offside that N’Golo Kante has seen his situation change at Chelsea. The French international is edging closer to signing a new contract with the west London club. And such a situation has handed a blow to Barcelona and Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.

Romano said, “N’Golo Kante’s priority has always been Chelsea and the Premier League. Kante is now in talks with Chelsea on different terms, this is why the situation is now open again. A few months ago it looked really complicated, but the situation is different now. Barcelona and Al Nassr have never reached any agreement with Kante, just normal interest but it’s now an open situation.”

N’Golo Kante has been one of the unlikeliest success stories in the last half a dozen years in the Premier League. The 31-year-old was an unknown quantity when he joined Leicester City from SM Caen in August 2015. But he played a pivotal role as the Foxes shocked the world to win the title.

The Frenchman subsequently joined Chelsea in July 2016 and delivered the Premier League title again, this time at Stamford Bridge. And in the following seasons, the player has won every trophy with the Blues. But injuries have hampered the veteran midfielder in the last few years, including the ongoing campaign.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner has managed only 175 minutes of game time across two outings. In addition, his Chelsea contract is winding down, thus adding to the speculation surrounding his future. And several European bigwigs, including Barcelona, have shown interest in the Chelsea midfielder.

Barcelona will likely see Sergio Busquets departing from Spotify Camp Nou in the summer transfer window. And the Blaugrana will need to delve into the market for a midfield reinforcement at the end of the season. Kante had thus emerged as a viable target, with recent reports claiming he was pushing Barcelona to sign him. In addition, Al Nassr showed interest in the player.

But the situation has changed, according to Fabrizio Romano. And Kante now looks set to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge instead of joining Barcelona. The 31-year-old has always been open to staying at Chelsea, and a renewal is on the cards.
