La Liga heavyweights Barcelona will reportedly keep tabs on the situation of N’Golo Kante at Chelsea in the coming months.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona will closely monitor the situations of several players in the final years of their contracts during the 2022/23 season. One such star is N’Golo Kante, with the Blaugrana tracking developments over his contract talks with Chelsea.

N’Golo Kante has been one of the premier midfielders in the game since guiding Leicester City to a shock title triumph several years ago. And his stock has skyrocketed following his move to Chelsea. The Frenchman has also won the FIFA World Cup along the way, apart from numerous honours with the Blues.

The 31-year-old has turned out 262 times for Chelsea, chipping in with 13 goals and 15 assists. But Kante faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge after entering the final year of his contract with Chelsea. And his situation has captured the attention of several European bigwigs, including FC Barcelona.

Barcelona will be desperate to exploit the market for free agents in the 2023 summer transfer window after benefitting from that outlook in the last two years. The Catalan giants have beefed up their squad considerably with such a way of thinking. And the latest player to emerge on Barcelona’s radar is Kante.

Barcelona bolstered the midfield unit by signing Franck Kessie this past summer. But with Sergio Busquets in the twilight of his career, the Catalan giants need to lay down a succession plan. Kante is thus a viable target for Barcelona, despite the fitness issues plaguing the Chelsea midfielder.

But recent reports have claimed that Kante wants to remain at Chelsea beyond next summer’s transfer window. So Barcelona might have to identify alternatives if the 31-year-old remains hell-bent on staying at Stamford Bridge. Interestingly, one candidate might emerge from Chelsea.

Jorginho is on Barcelona’s radar, with the two parties making progress in contacts in the last few days. Several other midfielders are also on Barcelona’s wishlist, and we might see them launch the offensive for one as soon as January for a pre-contract agreement.
