Liverpool are inching closer towards the capture of Darwin Nunez, having agreed personal terms with the Benfica forward.

Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari has offered an update on the future of Darwin Nunez. Posting on his Twitter account, the transfer expert claims Liverpool are closing in on the capture of the SL Benfica striker, who has agreed personal terms with the club.

It could be a step forward for a Liverpool side scouring the market for attacking reinforcements, in light of Sadio Mane’s uncertain future at the club. The Senegalese forward has recently hinted at his desire to leave Anfield after a successful spell at the club that saw him win the Premier League and the Champions League title.

Mane has been closely linked with a move to Bayern Munich, who, in turn, are considering him as an ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The Polish hitman has confirmed his intentions to leave Bavaria in the summer, with Barcelona seemingly confident of sealing the deal.

Bayern are ready to fork out €40 million for the services of Mane. It is a reasonable value for a player of his quality, even though his current contract at Anfield expires at the end of next season.

Liverpool are hoping to utilise Mane’s transfer fee to fund a move for Nunez. Aged just 22, the Benfica starlet has shown immense potential during his two years of the club, impressing the onlookers with his speed, versatility and most importantly, his ability to score goals.

Nunez racked up 26 goals in 28 league matches this past season. His performances have not been restricted to just the Portuguese top flight, with the youngster also netting six times in the Champions League. He was a key figure in downing Barcelona in the group stage, while he also found the back of the net twice against Liverpool in the knockout rounds.

The Uruguayan, though, may soon embrace the Red of Liverpool and team up with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz in the coming season.

With personal terms already agreed, the onus is on Liverpool to agree a transfer fee with Benfica. Recent reports suggest the Reds have submitted a bid of around €100 million for the services of the 22-year-old. But with arch-rivals Manchester United also involved in the chase, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the young Uruguayan this summer.
