Coventry City will turn their attention towards sealing the Championship title following their promotion, as they take on an in-form Portsmouth side.
Ewood Park was the venue where Bobby Thomas scored an 84th-minute equaliser to seal Coventry City’s promotion to the Premier League. Having returned from down below in League Two eight years ago, the Sky Blues have risen through the English football pyramid and will now play top-flight football next season.
This is the first time Coventry City will play in the Premier League after a gap of 25 years, which in itself is a monumental achievement. While they may have achieved their primary goal, there is still the small matter of sealing the Championship title, with Frank Lampard’s men sitting ten points clear, although second-placed Ipswich Town have a game in hand.
All in all, the title looks to be headed Coventry City’s way either now or in the near future. They now host Portsmouth, and Lampard will want to take a giant step towards the Championship podium. However, a win is far from certain despite the team going five games unbeaten heading into this one, as there are three draws in that run.
Portsmouth’s 6-1 loss to QPR a few weeks back painted a grim picture, as there were genuine concerns over whether they would be able to beat the drop. John Mousinho’s men have turned the corner in superb style, going on an unbeaten run of five games, including three consecutive victories without conceding a goal.
That run included wins over promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town, while last weekend they secured a crucial 1-0 win over relegation rivals Leicester City. Pompey are close to being mathematically secured from relegation, although Mousinho must engineer another top-notch win over leaders Coventry to aid their cause, or risk getting dragged back into a relegation fight if things do not go their way.
Team News & Tactics
Coventry City
Frank Lampard does not have too many worries in his squad. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s status unclear after missing the last two games with a rib injury, while there is a small likelihood he may not play again this season.
Miguel Angel Brau and Oliver Dovin are certainly out of contention for this home game against Portsmouth. Lampard could bring a few of his key stars back into the fold, as top scorer Haji Wright is in the frame to lead the line on Tuesday. Lampard will continue with his key settings, including a back three of Liam Kitching, Joel Latibeaudiere, and Bobby Thomas.
Matt Grimes and Victor Torp are the main midfielders for the Championship leaders, with Milan van Ewijk and Jay Dasilva keeping the width from the wing-back spots. Top scorer Wright will lead the line with the support of Brandon Thomas-Asante and Josh Eccles in the final third.
Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Rushworth; Kitching, Latibeaudiere, Thomas; Van Ewijk, Grimes, Torp, Dasilva; Thomas-Asante, Eccles; Wright
Portsmouth
John Mousinho has his own set of problems when it comes to squad selection for the trip to Coventry. Of late, they have been unable to call upon Gustavo Caballero, Franco Umeh, Mark Kosznovszky, and Zak Swanson.
Terry Devlin and Keshi Anderson are also in doubt of missing Portsmouth’s final three games of the season with hamstring problems sustained against Leicester City. Mousinho will keep using a back four, with Regan Poole and Conor Shaughnessy in the frame for the central defensive roles.
Ebou Adams and Andre Dozzell have their midfield places sorted, with Conor Chaplin in the attacking midfield role. Colby Bishop will lead the line for Portsmouth against Coventry City with Millenic Alli and Adrian Segecic in the wide roles.
Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Schmid; Bowat, Poole, Shaughnessy, Williams; Adams, Dozzell; Alli, Chaplin, Segecic; Bishop

Player to Watch
Haji Wright
Wright has 16 goals for Coventry City this season in the Championship, which has been crucial to the team’s promotion push. He has been going through a drought of sorts of late, having gone five games without a goal heading into the next one against Portsmouth.
With Coventry already securing their primary objective of promotion, their next big task is sealing the Championship title. Wright will aim to rediscover his scoring form and help seal the title for his club over the coming games.
Prediction
Coventry City 1-1 Portsmouth
These are two teams in a decent vein of form, but on different trajectories. Portsmouth are arguably the side in better form, given their three consecutive victories, although going away to the Championship leaders will be a challenge in itself.
The same could be said about Coventry, who have registered three consecutive draws, but home advantage can play a role. With either side seemingly relaxed about their prospects this season, there is no real pressure on either of them to throw caution to the wind and take risks. Hence, this game has an entertaining draw written all over it.
