Arsenal continue looking for their first away league win of the season as they squandered a slender one-goal lead in controversial fashion to lose 2-1 to Watford on Saturday.

Per Mertesacker, making his first Premier League start in 532 days, marked his comeback with the Gunner’s first away league goal of the season. But, the Arsenal captain couldn’t inspire his side to earn all three points as a frantic and controversial 20-minute spell at the end of the match saw Watford come from behind to claim the win.

Hector Bellerin was penalised, perhaps harshly so, for bringing Richarlison down inside his own box and Troy Deeney made no mistake in converting from the spot. With the momentum completely on their side thereafter, Watford’s win was sealed when Tom Cleverley converted from close-range in the dying moments.

The result sent Watford into fourth place in the Premier League table, while Arsenal dropped down to 6th spot. In the aftermath of the match, Arsene Wenger was at the receiving end of fans’ frustration as the North Londoners remain in search of their first away win.

Granit Xhaka was singled out by Arsenal fans for a poor performance, while Gooners also continue clamouring for Jack Wilshere to get a Premier League outing.

But, there was some praise reserved for Per Mertesacker, who marked his first Premier League start in 532 days with Arsenal’s only goal.
