Wayne Rooney responded strongly to the widespread criticism of him by journalists, pundits and fans due to his off-field indiscretions with a captain’s performance in Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Feyenoord.

The 31-year-old forward scored the opener against Feyenoord, his 39th goal in European competition for the Red Devils. Rooney is now the club’s record scorer in Europe, overtaking Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. It also takes his all-time scoring record for United one goal short of Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 249 goals.

The Man United captain also set up a goal for Juan Mata in an all-round impressive performance. It was the perfect answer to the storm of controversy that has surrounded him recently, after he was pictured in an intoxicated state while on international duty with England.
