Burnley have been relegated to the EFL Championship following a disappointing campaign in the top flight, and they are actively searching for a new manager to lead their promotion push in the coming weeks.
According to a report by Football Insider, Burnley have identified Steven Gerrard as their primary target to replace Scott Parker. The 45-year-old former Liverpool captain is expected to take over in the summer. The Clarets are hoping he can deliver a transformative effect similar to Frank Lampard’s recent success at Coventry City, where the former England midfielder secured surprising promotion to the Premier League.
Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider, “It does seem that Steven Gerrard is keen to return to the dugout sooner rather than later. He would be open to the possibility of a move to a Championship club, obviously there’s been links with Burnley who will be in the Championship next season.
“Obviously Scott Parker has now left Burnley as well, and the path has been cleared for Gerrard to return to management in England. Probably Gerrard himself has seen what his old England teammate, Frank Lampard, has done at Coventry, leading them to Premier League promotion.
“He has rebuilt his managerial career, so maybe Gerrard is thinking he could follow a similar path, make a move to the Championship and take over a club where he could maybe lead them to Premier League.”
Gerrard’s Mixed Managerial Record
Gerrard demonstrated genuine managerial competence in Scotland, where he helped Rangers secure league titles. However, his subsequent moves to Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq produced disappointing results. The Liverpool icon has shown he can succeed in certain environments but has struggled to replicate that success consistently across different leagues and clubs.
The 45-year-old will be determined to restore credibility to his managerial career, and this represents a critical opportunity. If he can help Burnley secure promotion next season, it could significantly enhance his prospects for managing elite clubs, particularly given that his Liverpool managerial aspirations have recently emerged.
Burnley endured a disappointing campaign in the top flight and require a rebuild in the Championship. They need an experienced manager capable of maximising their squad’s potential and attracting quality signings in the transfer market. Gerrard commands significant global recognition and demonstrated an ability to strengthen Rangers considerably during his tenure.
Gerrard achieved a 65% win rate at Rangers, but posted 33% and 35% win rates at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq respectively. He will need to demonstrate substantial improvement upon those figures if appointed to the Burnley position this summer.
Scott Parker performed effectively during his Burnley tenure, securing promotion from the Championship with a disciplined approach. The Lancashire outfit operated as a well-drilled unit in the second tier but found their conservative tactical approach exposed at the higher level.
Burnley will require a manager with greater tactical flexibility and attacking ambition. Gerrard developed a notably impressive approach at Rangers, establishing a team that combined defensive organisation with goal-scoring firepower. His ability to add attacking dimension while maintaining structural discipline could prove transformative for Burnley’s promotion prospects.
