Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic has reportedly emerged as a loan target for German giants Borussia Dortmund ahead of the winter transfer window.

According to a report from Fichajes, Borussia Dortmund are keen on signing Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic in the January transfer window, on loan for the rest of the season.

Jovic has been with Real Madrid since 2019, arriving in a big-money move from Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt. However, the Serbian international has had a hard time in the Spanish capital, struggling to make any sort of impact in front of goal. After a torrid 18-month spell, the 24-year-old was loaned out to ex-club Eintracht Frankfurt for the second half of the last season but failed to rekindle his form.

Back at Madrid, Jovic was tipped to leave the La Liga bigwigs in the summer, but manager Carlo Ancelotti decided to give him another shot at proving himself. The Serb remains second-choice behind Karim Benzema, although he has shown some positives when playing in the absence of the Frenchman, scoring one goal and setting up two more for his teammates.

Now, Borussia Dortmund have set their sights on the 24-year-old Jovic as they look to bolster their attacking unit ahead of the second half of the season. The Black and Yellows are aiming to mount a title challenge while also hoping to go the distance in the UEFA Europa League. Such lofty ambitions will need them to have adequate squad depth across all competitions.

Even though they strengthened their attack in the summer with the signing of Donyell Malen, he has failed to make the kind of impact expected, leaving the goalscoring burden on the shoulders of Erling Haaland. So, adding another forward to give them another source of goals could be a smart move from Marco Rose’s men.

A move for Jovic, however, would be best avoided. While he had an exceptional season in Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt, he has since failed to hit those heights. Upon returning to his old stomping ground earlier this year, the 24-year-old could not recapture his best form.

Furthermore, serious question marks remain over whether Real Madrid would be willing to send him out on loan. As things stand, Ancelotti does not have any cover for Benzema, given that the Italian tactician has hardly favoured Mariano Diaz. With Los Blancos themselves pushing for the La Liga crown and still alive in the Champions League, they are unlikely to want to weaken their squad.

So, a loan move for Jovic midway through the campaign is unlikely to be sanctioned.
