Newcastle United are reportedly considering making a move for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge in the January transfer window.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Newcastle United’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements ahead of the winter transfer window has taken them to Sheffield United, with Sander Berge emerging as a target.

Berge has been with Sheffield United since January 2020, arriving from Belgian outfit KRC Genk. The 23-year-old enjoyed a fairly impressive first year before an injury towards the end of 2020 sidelined him for the rest of the season. With the Blades getting relegated from the Premier League, there was speculation surrounding his future in the summer transfer window.

However, Sheffield United managed to keep hold of the Norwegian midfielder. He started the 2021/22 campaign positively before another hamstring injury forced him out of action from September to late November. Berge has made 40 appearances for the club, scoring three times and setting up two more.

Despite his injury problems at Bramall Lane, Berge is held in high regard in the footballing community, and Newcastle United are now hoping to lure him to St. James’ Park in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Magpies find themselves second from bottom in the Premier League table, with the threat of relegation looming large. Reinforcements are needed across the pitch from attack to defence. There is little in terms of quality in the midfield department beyond Jonjo Shelvey.

The likes of Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick, Sean Longstaff have not performed consistently enough, while Joe Willock has been unable to recreate the performances from the second half of the last season. So, it goes without saying that there is a need for the injection of a bit more quality depth in the middle of the park.

Berge, to that end, can be a viable option for the Tynesiders given that he gave a good account of himself in the handful of Premier League games he played. He is able to play as a defensive midfielder or in a slightly advanced role and would provide solid support to Shelvey in the middle of the park.

It will be interesting to see if Newcastle go after the Norwegian international or look at other targets, with Rangers star Glen Kamara also on their radar.
