Aston Villa are ready to rival Everton in the race to sign Harry Winks, who is keen on leaving Tottenham in January.
According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa have joined the race to sign Harry Winks. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is increasingly keen on finding an exit from North London in the upcoming January transfer window, having admitted his lack of prospects at his current club.
Winks is unlikely to leave Spurs on a permanent deal, but Everton have been linked with a loan move in the past. And it appears Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion have now emerged as new contenders for the Englishman.
All of these three clubs rate Winks highly due to his tireless attitude in midfield coupled with his technical prowess. Yet, the 25-year-old has found life difficult at Tottenham, especially after the arrival of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg last summer.
The spirited Dane has added more quality in the press while offering more consistent performances in the middle of the park. Winks did feature alongside Hojbjerg for a period last season, but under the leadership of Nuno Espirito Santo, the Englishman has fallen behind Oliver Skipp in the pecking order.
Ten matches into the new campaign, Winks has featured in only 60 minutes of league football. As a result, the midfielder is now keen on finding a new club that can offer him regular game-time and a platform to potentially relaunch his career.
Everton have been linked with a move for the Spurs midfielder, primarily as an alternative for top-target Donny van de Beek. But the recent interest from Aston Villa could be an exciting prospect for the 25-year-old, as the Villans can offer him the opportunity to establish himself as a key figure in the club’s midfield unit.
Although Winks may still have to compete with the likes of Marvelous Nakamba and Douglas Luiz, his chances of making a breakthrough could improve significantly. The same applies to Everton, who are seemingly desperate to sign a new midfielder due to the injury woes of Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Andre Gomes.
As for Tottenham, it remains to be seen whether they allow Winks to leave the club permanently. In this case, it would make things difficult for the interested parties, with the Lilywhites likely to hold out for a hefty fee for the Englishman in January.
