Manchester United are reportedly targeting Sami Khedira, who is set to have his contract terminated by Juventus this summer.
According to a report by The Sun, Sami Khedira has come up on Manchester United’s radar after being reportedly taken out of Andrea Pirlo’s plans. Any possible move would not cost the Red Devils any transfer fee.
Sami Khedira has come a long way since winning the Champions League with Real Madrid and the World Cup with Germany in the same year – 2014. He moved to Juventus on a free transfer the next summer and made 20 appearances in his first season, scoring five goals and providing four assists while being deployed primarily as part of a midfield trio.
Numerically, his best season came during the 2017/18 campaign, when he had a tally of nine goals and two assists while playing 26 games. But, his importance in the team has continually dropped since. It has come to a point where he has been left out of new manager Andrea Pirlo’s plans for next season, despite having just the one year remaining on his contract.
Juventus have six central midfielders, including Khedira on their payroll in the midfield department including new signings Arthur and Weston McKennie. Consequently, Khedira’s contract runs the risk of being terminated which would make him a free agent.
In a bizarre turn of events, Manchester United have taken an interest in the World Cup winner. In the past, the Red Devils have been interested in his services after coming close to completing his signing, having made a deadline-day attempt to land him during his days at Real Madrid before Carlo Ancelotti convinced the German to stay.
Manchester United might be in the market looking to bolster their midfield ahead of the chaotic schedule that lies in their path. That said, the 33-year-old Khedira is hardly the solution. Not only does he runs the risk of fitness after sustaining two extremely injury-prone seasons, but he might also eat up the playing time of future prospects like Scott McTominay and James Garner.
Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer should instead turn his head towards someone like Marcel Brozovic, who has been deemed as transferable by Inter Milan in an attempt to raise money from player sales. The Croat would serve a like-for-like rotating option for Nemanja Matic, and could potentially replace him seamlessly in the long run. As for Khedira, Manchester United would be served better to avoid a move.
