Manchester City have announced the signing of long-time target Benjamin Mendy from AS Monaco for £52 million

According to a report by Manchester City’s official website, Benjamin Mendy has made a move to the Etihad stadium this summer as the club successfully managed to clinch a £52 million deal. The 23-year-old’s signing will take City’s expenditure over £200 million this transfer window.

Manager Pep Guardiola will be especially pleased with the business he has done this summer when it comes to strengthening the club’s back-line. He will be looking to establish a stronger claim to winning the Premier League trophy next season and for that, he was in dire need of quality defenders.

Signing Kyle Walker was the first move he made in doing so and now with Benjamin Mendy at his disposal as well, Guardiola has truly succeeded in procuring the best talent to guard the back-line.

Mendy has signed a five-year deal with the cash-rich club and will join his new squad in the USA as they get ready for their second pre-season game against Real Madrid in LA.

It was only last summer that he joined Monaco on a five-year deal, following which, the French champions were able to put up strong performances especially in the defence. Leonardo Jardim’s side did benefit from Mendy’s energy down the left and that became key to Monaco’s attacking style.

Mendy quickly managed to establish himself as one of the best full-backs in world football with his powerful and direct style of play. His performances helped Monaco win the Ligue 1 title and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League as well.

The youngster’s stellar displays have been rightfully appreciated by several big clubs. Mendy was also believed to be a Manchester United target but Guardiola will be happy to have managed to seal the deal edging past his fierce rivals. With Mendy’s style of play, it shouldn’t be too tough for him to settle into life at the Etihad stadium.

The fact that Guardiola let Gael Clichy leave for free this summer has only cleared up more space for Mendy and he is likely to be a regular starter for Manchester City.
