Transfer News: Liverpool increasingly confident of landing Ryan Sessegnon in the summer

Liverpool are reportedly growing increasingly confident of signing Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon in the summer, over other Premier League suitors.

The Sun are reporting that Liverpool are confident of securing a deal to bring Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon to Anfield in the summer. The player is being tailed by almost every top Premier League club, with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal all linked with the prodigious left-back.

The term prodigy has often been loosely used to describe budding English footballers. However, Ryan Sessegnon is a prodigy in the truest sense of the word. At 16, the player managed to come through the ranks and carve out a place for himself in the first-team setup at Craven Cottage.

Now 17, the left-back has notched up 25 appearances in the Championship alone, with a return of 5 goals and 3 assists to show for his efforts – one can see just why there is a flock of Premier League clubs chasing the starlet.

The English Under-19 international, though, has been profusely linked with Liverpool, who are tipped to land the player, despite reports of Reds already securing a left-back signing for the summer, with a deal agreed to add Hull star Andrew Robertson to the squad.

Of other clubs that are majorly interested in the player, Manchester United were reported to have joined the Reds recently in pursuit of the Englishman, with Luke Shaw failing to gain Jose Mourinho’s trust.

The addition of Sessegnon would provide some quality competition for Luke Shaw or some other player, in case Shaw is replaced by another incoming.

Jurgen Klopp has identified left-back as a major improvement area and even if Andrew Robertson is due to arrive, the German could be looking to sign Ryan Sessegnon in a bid to free up James Milner for a prominent role in midfield.

Also, with Liverpool set to take part in Europe at least, if not Champions League, Ryan Sessegnon will have several chances to provide stiff competition in the battle to be the first-choice at Anfield. Also, the prospect of being able to play European football at the nascent age of 17 will surely appeal to the Englishman.

Liverpool need to add serious depth to the squad if they are to compete on all fronts next campaign – depth being one of the reasons their title challenge faltered midway through the current season.

And, the presence of two of the best up-and-coming left-backs in the squad along with an experienced face, in James Milner, who can put in a good shift at left-back if needed, is the right way to go.

Who knows, Sessegnon might turn out to be the next major success story in the English Premier League.
