Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that the club will spend big on the right players in an effort to win the Premier League crown.
The Frenchman has been relatively quiet this summer. He splurged the cash on his first signing as he roped in Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach for a reported €30 million. The central midfielder is expected to play a regular role in Wenger’s plans for the upcoming 2016/17 season.
A month later, the Gunners boss turned his attention to Asia and signed young Japanese sensation Takuma Asano. The 21-year-old was also lauded as “one for the future” by Wenger, and would join the youth setup. Rob Holding also moved to the Emirates, signing for an initial fee of £2.5 million, completing the triplet of summer signings.
The club has been linked with an array of names over the last couple of months. Arsene Wenger – who hasn’t signed a ‘world-class’ player this summer – has often had his transfer policy questioned. Speaking to Sky Sports regarding a potential big name arrival, the Frenchman said:
“We are very active and if we find the right candidates, we will spend the big money.
“We have already spent big and, until now, nobody has made a bigger transfer than we have in the country.”
However, that fact could soon change as Premier League rivals Manchester United are closing in on a world-record fee for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba. It is understood that Juve manager Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed that there are talks ongoing between the two parties.
Wenger weighed in on the Pogba to United scenario, and said that his side could pull of something similar as well.
“Even if Pogba might fly from Italy to England, I don’t know, but overall we have made a big investment already and we are active.
“I believe we are active, very active every day, and it’s not over. Today we are in July and the transfer market finishes on August 31.
“A lot happens many times in the last week so it’s a long time to go but we are active, we are working,” stated the Arsenal manager.
In recent weeks, Arsenal have been linked with some high-profile attackers including Gonzalo Higuain, Mauro Icardi and Alexandre Lacazette. The other big names rumoured to be on Wenger’s shortlist are Arda Turan and Matthias Ginter.
