The 2016 Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo posted a heartfelt message on social media, speaking to the children suffering in the war torn region of Syria.

The Portuguese legend pleads with the children of Syria to not lose hope, and assures them that the world stands with them. The video below was posted on his official twitter handle and he says, “This is for the children of Syria. We know that you have been suffering a lot. I am a very famous player, but you are the true heroes. Don’t lose your hope. The world is with you. We care about you. I am with you.”

The message was posted in support of Save The Children, and the Real Madrid forward has also made a ‘generous donation’ to help their cause. The Director of the organisation, Nick Finney, mentioned in a statement that Ronaldo is a beacon of hope that the children need now more than ever.

He said, “Cristiano Ronaldo’s generous donation will help us to support children from Aleppo and across Syria, who have suffered things children should never have to live through. We are tremendously grateful for his life-changing support. Ronaldo is not only one of the world’s most iconic sports figures, but he also has become a beacon of hope for millions of boys and girls worldwide – and hope is something that Syria’s children need now more than ever.”
