Leo Messi scored the only goal of the match between Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona as the Catalans were crowned as Spanish champions at Vicente Calderon on Sunday. And Rojiblancos coach Diego Simeone said after the game that a genius of Messi proved the difference between the two sides.
Atletico Madrid made FC Barcelona work hard in the first half as the visitors found it difficult to break the defence of Rojiblancos. But a wonderful goal from Messi helped FC Barcelona secure the title at Vicente Calderon. And Diego Simeone was full of praise for Messi in his press conference.
“Before all else I would like to congratulate the champions,” Diego Simeone told reporters.
“They are deserved winners. It must be nice for them to reclaim the trophy after having missed out last season. We lost this game because of a moment of genius from Messi.a
However, the Atletico Madrid coach was magnanimous in defeat and remains satisfied with the efforts of his players this season.
“In 50 years, we have won two leagues. We have a lot of work to do. We are fighting to finish third; ita s very complicated to end as league champions.
“We will try to compete with the weapons we have. But looking at it realistically, we are still involved in an internal tournament of our own with Sevilla and Valencia.a
Meanwhile, FC Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba was extremely happy with their victory and said that they have proved everybody wrong with their displays this season.
“They thought we were dead but we have had a great season,” Jordi Alba told Barca TV.
“The truth is that I am very happy. The atmosphere is the best I can remember and hopefully this is just the beginning. This is a great day with lots of joy. This title cost us a lot so I’m very happy and you cannot ask for more.a
