Manchester United Team News: Carrick Injured, Shaw Suspended

Is He The Right Man For United?

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Michael Carrick and Luke Shaw will be unavailable against Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. Carrick suffered a calf muscle injury in the days leading up to his side’s encounter with Leicester City and will be out till the end of this month. The midfielder was out with an ankle injury prior to that which he had picked up United’s goalless draw against Cambridge United in the 4th Round of the FA Cup more than a fortnight ago. Left back Luke Shaw, meanwhile, got sent off for two bookable offences against West Ham at the weekend and he will serve a one-match suspension. Speaking at his pre-match interview with MUTV ahead of the Burnley match, Van Gaal revealed his options as he said, a Only Michael Carrick is injured. Luke Shaw is of course suspended so I have to choose out of the rest.” The likes of Ashley Young, Rafael and Victor Valdes played in the Under-21’s 2-1 win over their Chelsea counterparts on Monday evening to regain their match fitness and Van Gaal explained that decision, “Yesterday I played five players of my selection in the second team [Under-21s] and they won against Chelsea.” a We had a lot of injuries in the first half of the season and now they are recovered. I think they all need match rhythm in the second team before they can play in the first squad. Now we’ve made this structure it’s becoming better because only Michael Carrick is injured so I think the procedure is a very good procedure.a The tournament permits a side to field three overage players and United have been using that rule to nurture injured players back to health. United have suffered an astonishing 56 injuries since the start of August. And the manager will be cautious in not adding to that list after their draw against West Ham which was rescued by Danny Blind with a 93rd minute leveller. a I have to see how the players have recovered from the match against West Ham United,” he said. “That was a tough game as we had to fight until the end so I have to look and see how they have recovered.a Burnley on the other hand will be without Dean Marney (knee) and Kevin Long, both of whom are suffering knee injuries. Stephen Ward is out with an ankle injury while Matt Taylor continues to recover from a calf injury.
