Manchester United Close To Sign Argentina International: Sky Italia

Manchester United are closing in on Argentina International goalkeeper Sergio Romero as per reports in Sky Italia.

In an extra-ordinary press conference last night, Louis van Gaal made it very clear that Victor Valdes has no future at Manchester United following his refusal to play for the reserves team and omitted him from the pre-season tour squad.

Manchester United are now in the market for goalkeeper again, despite David De Gea’s move to Real Madrid on hold.

Sergio Romero Linked

The former Sampdoria shot-stopper is a free agent after his contract expired and over the last couple of days he had been in advanced negotiations with Roma to sign a two-year contract.

.

However, according to a report in Football-Italia.net who quote Sky Sport Italia, Manchester United have since advanced in the race for the World Cup Finalist looking to sign him as a replacement for the departing Victor Valdes.

Romero has 62 international caps for Argentina and was signed by the Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal during his time in charge of Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar. The duo won the Eredivisie title in his second and van Gaal’s final season in charge of the Dutch outfit.

Romero was on loan from Roma to Monaco last season where he featured only on 11 occasions but the stopper did play in all six of Argentina’s matches at the 2015 Copa America as they finished as runners-up to hosts Chile.

Romero might not be that bad an option as a back up keeper given his experience with Argentina and especially that the manager knows the player pretty well.

Valdes, on the other hand has reported interest from Antalyaspor in Turkey and Valencia and is almost certain to leave the club now.
