Despite being ridiculed and being labeled as a the a fat full backa on social media, Manchester United left back Luke Shaw has admitted that he does still enjoy his a bad snacksa , albeit occasionally.

The 19 year-old, who was a summer signing from Southampton and cost United a massive A?27m, had, in pre-season, said that he was not a fit enougha to meet manager Louis Van Gaala s a high demandsa .

Soon, though, Shaw was hailed as an a examplea by the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich trainer as Van Gaal revealed that the defender was a training fantasticallya .

“A balanced diet is very important for professional footballers or even athletes, you need to know what days you need what,” Shaw told the Manchester Evening News

“You need carbs when you’re getting nearer to the match and protein after to help the muscles recover quicker, but I think that you can’t always eat healthy, there’s going to be a day during the week, maybe after the game, you can have a bad snack.

“You can have maybe a chocolate bar or maybe even a takeaway once a month but it’s always got to be after the game, not during the week when you’re training towards the game.”

Shaw has had a mixed start to his Manchester United career, missing several games through injury and poor form, while impressing in others. The crowd at Old Trafford, who are known to get behind their young players, seem to be back Shaw to succeed despite the slow start.

In glimpses, Shaw has shown what he can produce. A run from inside his own half against Crystal Palace at home comes to mind. Shaw burst past three defenders, making enough room for a shot which was saved brilliantly by Julian Speroni. It is those kind of displays that United fans are looking forward too from the prodigious teenager as they look to secure fourth place.

Next up, the Red Devils take on Sunderland in a crucial game at Old Trafford.
