The whole transfer frenzy of the last two and a half months boils down to one day, the transfer deadline day. All the teams try to get last minute deals over the line before the transfer window ends.
Some go for bargains, other go for big name players looking for a fresh challenge and even more money. Anthony Martial, the French 19-year-old from Monaco is close to signing for Manchester United in a deal believed to be in the region of A?36m plus add ons. Call it what you may like, but panic buy is something you should be leaning towards.
With the Spanish transfer window set to close tonight, it would be clear if David De Gea would be moving to Real Madrid or not and hence we would not be discussing the future of the Spaniard. Here we take a look at the three big money transfers which might happen on deadline day.
1. Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion to Tottenham Hotspur)
The English U-21 star has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur for a long time now. The White Hart Lane outfit have struggled to find the goals in the Premier League so far, scoring only thrice in the four games with last season’s top scorer Harry Kane suffering a goal drought of sorts
Spurs’ manager Mauricio Pochettino has identified Berahino as the striker who could help reduce the goal-scoring burden on Harry Kane and the club are interested in concluding a deal. However, the price seems to be the stumbling block with West Brom needing money to sign other targets. The Baggies are holding out for somewhere close to A?25 million. Berahino being home grown and still in his early days could fetch a price in that range.
West Brom have so far rejected two transfer offers from Spurs and have also rejected the transfer request handed in by the player. The striker scored 14 goals last term and would be a long-term solution at the club. If Spurs do match the asking price for the English international, a deadline day move for the 22-year-old could still be on the cards.
2. John Stones (Everton to Chelsea FC)
With a flailing back four Chelsea FC have conceded 9 goals in four Premier League games and are currently on 4 points, 8 points behind league leaders Manchester City. The title holders’ lack of pace in defence has been exposed from teams in the opening four games and Mourinho had identified Stones as the man who would help solve the problem.
However, Everton have been turning down offer after offer for the young starlet and their stance reeks of confidence and a denial to budge to the power of money. But, how much will be too much for the blue half of Merseyside to turn down? Chelsea FC have almost always signed the player they have wanted and at the end of the day, Roman Abramovich might shell out the millions that Mourinho needs to sign his top target of the window.
A lot of excitement could be expected on this front come deadline day tomorrow. Although with the credibility of manager Roberto Martinez and chairman Bill Kenwright on the line, Chelsea FC might need to look elsewhere.
3. Ezequiel Garay (Zenit Saint Petersburg to Chelsea FC)
If Chelsea FC finally fail in their pursuit of John Stones or decide to give up their chase, the London club would be looking to bring in an experienced center-back to Stamford Bridge before the window slams shut tomorrow.
Garay has been a mainstay in the Argentine side which made it to the finals of the World Cup last year and the Copa America earlier this year. The former Benfica man has been a first team regular at Zenit St Petersburg since making the switch and has garnered interest from some of Europe’s top clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea FC.
The 28-year-old might be a fall back option if the Blues’ pursuit of Stones fails. However, the lack of pace in the central defenders at Chelsea FC will not be addressed with the signing of Garay as the Argentine is not the quickest on the field. The future of Garay depends on Mourinho and how much he feels that his defence at Stamford Bridge needs reinforcements.
If Mourinho decides that he wants Stones only and is prepared to wait for a couple of windows to prize away his top target, then Garay would have to continue playing in Russia. Nonetheless, Garay would be a good solid addition to the Chelsea FC back-line that has been unfounded more often than not this season.
