It’s been almost a day since Manchester United lost their Capital One Cup Round of 16 tie against Middlesbrough FC, but the controversy regarding Wayne Rooney’s missed penalty still rages on.
This time however, all the talk is not about the England international’s poor form, but about whether a laser shone at the player’s eyes interfered with his process of taking the spot kick.
Video footage clearly shows a green light being shone at the Manchester United striker’s eyes (or at least at his face), when he was standing over the ball, ready to take the penalty kick.

Rooney was taking the penalty in front of 10,000 away fans, one of whom seemingly flashed the laser at the Manchester United striker’s eyes, while he was taking the penalty kick.
The Football Association has launched an inquiry into the matter, after the incident was reported, according to Daily Mirror, although no action has been taken yet.
In a similar incident, that occurred earlier this season, Aberdeen reported Shkendija, a club from Macedonia, for shining a laser at their goalkeeper Danny Ward. Shkendija, who were reported to UEFA for this incident, were fined A?8,000.

While Middlesbrough FC face fines by the FA, Manchester United would be more worried about their dwindling form, and the inability of their striker Rooney to get on the score sheet this season. Louis van Gaal’s side face Crystal Palace on Saturday, followed by a home match against CSKA Moscow, in the midweek, in a Champions League group stage encounter. It would be interesting to see whether Van Gaal benches the England international.
